How to make Compose work

  • Quote

Post by iandoug » Thu Jan 30, 2025 7:16 pm

Hi

A recent update (I think the big one a while back) to KDE broke my Compose functionality.

How do I get it back?

I have set the compose key to Left Win like it always was, but that refuses to work.

Is there some driver possibly not loaded?

I need Compose for my own custom characters. Using a picker is tedious.

I don't know if "Left Win == Meta" (apparently) has any thing to do with the problem. I unticked that option, it did not help.

Thanks, Ian

Ok I looked at

https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Compose_key

and installed qxkb, which was able to set compose to left win.

Don't know if anything else broke, will probably discover in due course.

FWIW, outputs running qxkb as root:

Code: Select all

fractal /home/ian # qxkb
QStandardPaths: runtime directory '/run/user/1000' is not owned by UID 0, but a directory permissions 0700 owned by UID 1000 GID 1000

^C
and as user:

Note:

qxkb totally messed up the "key repeat" settings, luckily my old box provided the correct rates which I set via KDE's settings app.

This issue remains... it worked for a while and then stopped.

Any ideas as to where to look to resolve will be gratefully received :-)

That other settings program now refuses to start ... think it did not like what KDE settings did.

Thanks, Ian
