Last night I did the routine "emerge --sync ; emerge ... @world" which I do every weekend.

Today, neuvo X software for nvidia X locked up, which it does occasionally, so I had to reboot. After the reboot, my wifi device disappeared.

So after so fiddling around with it, including rebooting a few more times, I looked at dmesg, and saw the following excerpt:
Code:

etc.

So I suspect something incompatible with the wifi firmware or driver. Anybody else see this? Everything else except wifi seem to be working properly.

What do I need to do to get my wifi working again?

Maybe try to recompile or update the kernel and the firmware. That because a long time ago, I read somewhere than to use different versions of gcc and its toolkit for the system and the kernel can cause hard to debug issues.

I figured out my problem. I got interrupted many time while working on this, and went days before I could return to working on this problam again. I had by that time forgotten that I had rebuilt my kernel to add some stuff to support KVM. Apparently, I had forgotten to do the "make modules_install" step after the compile.

This became apparent when I booted a Live CD and did a lsmod to see what all was loaded. I then booted my system that has the wifi problem and di an lsmod. When I saw what was missing, I figured out that I must have forgotten todo the make modules_install step, so I recompiled th ekerrnel again and did the make modules_install, and then everything worked again.
