lightdm xorg gtk greeter no keyboard/mouse

Hello all,
I have installed gentoo with xorg, lightdm and i3 window manager. I obviously missed a step. Unfortunately, I am booted into the gtk greeter login screen with no keyboard or mouse. I need to boot into a console and login as root to solve this problem, but how do I do this from the grub menu?

Before choosing a kernel to boot in grub, press the 'e' key to edit the options. On the end of the linux line, add nogui and then press F10 key to boot. If this is systemd, then there is some other option to change targets (which I don't know offhand).
