Saw this in eselect news today, and haven't followed through with the update yet. I believe I'm currently on 17.1, and split-usr desktop. When I upgrade, would it be best to stay with split, or would switching to merged (following the intructions of upgrading to the new split-usr profile first, then switching) be the better choice going forward?

This will be the better choice and also the current one with new installations

split-usr will be supported on OpenRC for the foreseeable future. It is not required to use merged-usr at this time.

pizza-rat,

split-user to merged-user and the 17.1 to 23.0 upgrade are separate steps.

Only systemd users must do the split-user to merged-user change before the the 17.1 to 23.0 update, as there are no 23.0/split-user profiles for systemd.

Thank you all. Unless I have something to gain from merged-usr I'll just stick to split for the time being, then :D

There's one benefit of staying split-usr : You're vaccinated against systemd
