I'm currently in the process of installing Gentoo on my laptop and I'm at the "Installing system tools" section of the handbook.

I issued the command to install systemd-cron, but it failed with a message stating that it no longer supports split-usr. The problem is that I'm on a merged-usr profile.

Code:
livecd / # eselect profile show
Current /etc/portage/make.profile symlink:
  default/linux/amd64/17.1/desktop/gnome/systemd/merged-usr

Here is the build log:
Code:
Package:    sys-process/systemd-cron-2.2.0-r1:0
Repository: gentoo
Maintainer: rich0@gentoo.org
USE:        abi_x86_64 amd64 elibc_glibc kernel_linux runparts
FEATURES:   network-sandbox preserve-libs sandbox userpriv usersandbox
 Please complete the migration to merged-usr.

Looks like a bug. pkg_pretend says:
Code:
pkg_pretend() {
        if use runparts && ! [ -x /usr/bin/run-parts ] ; then
                eerror "Please complete the migration to merged-usr."
                eerror "https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Merge-usr"
                die "systemd-cron no longer supports split-usr"
        fi
}

A workaround is to disable the runparts USE until someone can coordinate, through a bug, sys-apps/debianutils and sys-process/systemd-cron working together again.

I just tried it, and I was able to proceed with the installation.

I also hope you've chosen a merged-usr stage3 to start with and not the general OpenRC split-usr (unlabeled) stage3 file.

I downloaded the stage3 from https://gentoo.osuosl.org/releases/amd64/autobuilds/current-stage3-amd64-desktop-systemd-mergedusr/.
