Just wanted to test out KDE Plasma 6 but it doesn't seem to be in the Gentoo repos (an RC1 release is there but I think this is a bit outdated?). Will the kde testing overlay provide what I need?

rc1 was released a week ago and there hasn't been a new rc nor an actual release that I can see since, not what I'd call outdated. Was added to ::gentoo almost at same time albeit it remains masked for testing being a pre-release (the mask message shown if attempt to emerge these will in fact give some usage instructions and other warnings).

The overlay does offer live (9999) ebuilds if it's what you're looking for though.

Oh my mistake. I thought I read that the RC1 on Gentoo was Alpha, which sounded quite old as Plasma 6 is on "Beta 2" now. I really just need something that was merged in early December (DMA-Fence deadlines) so the RC1 definitely sounds good enough. Thank you.

An RC is an RC, not anything else.

It looks like it's fully covered in this document.

i am on plasma6. one system have live(9999) and one system with RC1 from ::gentoo . to set it up read portage output . you need to do the same with kde-overlay (9999) as with RC1::gentoo
with the unmask. i would say plasma6 works quite well to be a RC.

Thanks for that. I managed to get RC1 installed. I've been having some framerate issues with it but my nvidia drivers are likely to blame. Will see what RC2 brings :)

It mean that you are running gentoos live (9999) ebuilds from kde-overlay . 6.1 dev is the bleeding edge now.

I'd guess the "preferred" way is to wait for it to appear in stable :-)

Plasma 6 is out, waiting for Gentoo Team to provide it.

So... no way to test it while it's hard masked?

Yes of course, but I don't go beyond the soft masked.

You know, I wish it would be possible to have it slotted and to switch between kde versions with eselect,
right now I have manually unmasked everything it asked me but it's not the best way do it like this.

If you're on ~arch, you can follow the instructions in the package.mask in ::gentoo. You can also use the unmask + keywords files in ::kde.

I do not recommend trying Plasma 6 right now if the sound of that makes you uncomfortable, or you're on ~arch. It will be unleashed when it's ready.

I don't mind tinker with my system, I've unmasked all (I think) the necessary packages but some packages it needs are missing?
eg. "kde-plasma/libkworkspace" doesn't have a ":6" slot so it's impossibile for me to upgrade, I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

Please don't recommend people unmerge anything.

zolfo, please share the full emerge command (ideally a world upgrade) and output.
