PostPosted: Sun Dec 07, 2008 11:58 am    Post subject: [SOLVED] Problem with a new Gentoo installation with KDE 4.1 Reply with quote

Hi,

I did a new installation of Gentoo on a Intel Core2 Quad and I experience toubles with KDE 4.1.

When I launch kdm, I correctly have the logon screen and then the splash screen with the 5 icons. The resolution is correct (1440x900) for my monitor I've already used on a previous installation.
But as soon the splash screen disappear and the tool bar (on the bottom screen) appears, screen became black and I have no other choice to turn power down (Ctrl+alt+F1 or Ctrl+alt+del both do not work).

The more surprising for me is when I launch startx then startkde, KDE is launched without problem!

I do not know on which logfile I can analyse the error. On /var/log/Xorg.0.log (you can see below) there is no (EE) entry. And, I don't know why, but I do not have /var/log/message file on this installation.

My video card is an ATI HD 3450.
I tried with ati_drivers module from portage and from proprietary driver with same result.
The user I try to log in is a new one (so without any eventual .kde files from a former installation)

/var/log/Xorg.0.log

have you tried deleting .kde4 in your home folder?
this has to be done before starting kde prefrably in vt1
stop the xdm and rm -rf .kde4
then start xdm and logon it will come up correct
run revdep-rebuild to check any lib missing in path.
re emerging plasma also may help.

Thanks for you reply.

.kde4 has been several time deleted ==> no change
I ran revdep-rebuild, several packages have been re-emerged but... ==> no change (even after reboot).
I re-emerged libplasma ==> no change :(

I lauched syslog and now I have /var/log/messages.

However, I don't know if it can help...

/var/log/messages

frame buffer setting in kernel is calling all that
you can try booting -fb option at the end of kernel line.
fglrx there are problems reporting with this other threads.
you can even try with vesa in kernel line.
version of Xorg-driver keep less than 1.5.2 or less.
these may help

I rebuilt my kernel without framebuffer support.

Code:

Device Drivers --->
  Graphics support --->
< > Support for frame buffer devices

I've also try adding "-fb" on the kernel command in grub... I have exactly the same problem (and the FB error in /var/log/messages).
Code:

Dec  9 23:14:16 cid fglrx: module license 'Proprietary. (C) 2002 - ATI Technologies, Starnberg, GERMANY' taints kernel.
Dec  9 23:14:16 cid [fglrx] Maximum main memory to use for locked dma buffers: 1883 MBytes.

Dec  9 23:14:16 cid [fglrx] PAT is enabled successfully!
Dec  9 23:14:16 cid [fglrx] module loaded - fglrx 8.55.2 [Oct 28 2008] with 1 minors
Dec  9 23:14:17 cid [fglrx] Reserved FB block: Shared offset:0, size:1000000
Dec  9 23:14:17 cid [fglrx] Reserved FB block: Unshared offset:ff77000, size:88000
Dec  9 23:21:41 cid kdm: :0[6660]: pam_unix(kde:session): session opened for user amelie by (uid=0)

You can notice that it is not the "Reserved FB block" which raises the crash, because here, I lauched KDM session 7 minutes after.

If it is the cause, what must I do ? Downgrade Xorg ? KDE ? ati-drivers ?
Thanks for help! I am without graphic session for 1 week now

for immediate use i would first try force vesa as option in kernel line
see if you have xf86-video-vesa installed.

/etc/init.d/xdm stop
mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf xorg.conf.bak
/etc/init.d/xdm start
if there is some thing wrong in xorg.conf automatic xorg will find a screen for you --i think.
does the startx work?
xinit ?
even if kde does not work xterm should come up
it may be possible to get X with one of the above tries.

Another thing I would reccomend is to start a kde 4.1 application (i.e dolphin) from xfce, or just simple xorg terminal - this can help as you probably will see all warning or errors which can provide you to the solution.
Then from xorg terminal run kwin - and look for the logs and errors.

With vesa driver: kde crashes (but not freeze) of Xorg maybe some secondes after...

/var/log/Xorg.0.log

in that case unmerge kdm and delete kdmrc better remove kdm folder itself.
then emerge kdm again.
re configured kdm might work ok like startkde.

if you have kde-3.5 installed try using /emerging kdm-3.5.10

Hi everyones!

Problem is resolved since I've added following lines in xorg.conf :
Code:
Section "Extensions"
        Option  "Composite"     "Off"
EndSection

Section "ServerFlags"
        Option "AIGLX"          "Off"
EndSection

Maybe I lose some 3D abilities (glxgear is near 400.000FPS) but as I am not a big gamer, it is not very important.

Thanks a lot for your help!
