Some would say it always has been. *ha*

But seriously. Updated to 115.6 and it broke. Downgraded to previous version, still broke. Created a new user, set up thunderbird there and ran it. Broke as well.

Here is what's broke:
Tabs will not restore.
When I send mail the mail will send, but not save to my server (all accounts are IMAP).
Will only receive mail at start up. After that no new mail is displayed.

I'll throw out some information below which may or may not tell you anything. At this point I'm guessing hence the forum post.

Thank you very much.

Some error messages from the console:

Code:

Hello,

I'm also seeing problems. My account is POP and it appears to work normal. But tabs will not restore, and the calendar is unavailable. In my case, the error messages at the console are different:

There error messages continue further, but I think they all start with a JavaScript problem, that I do not know how to handle.

Kind regards,
Pablo

Code:
 (thunderbird:5043): GLib-GIO-CRITICAL **: 07:32:15.767: g_dbus_connection_get_unique_name: assertion 'G_IS_DBUS_CONNECTION (connection)' failed

Do you have the same error with other gtk applications?

I ditched TB a long long time ago because it was not usable, but:
Quote:
When I send mail the mail will send, but not save to my server (all accounts are IMAP).

This is typically done server-side, on MTA, using bcc to sender if the sender's address exists in your supported domain. I mean, this particular point doesn't look like a thunderbird issue (unless you have some funny client-side filter rules which get in the way).

I see the update today from 115.5 to 115.6 is requiring me to unmask /dev-libs/icu. Is it possible that icu is what is causing the problem? I am going to wait to update.

I can't say for sure. Usually don't start things in the console.

When I get back to the computer in question I will check this out.

I have 4 computers with Windows and Linux Mint running Thunderbird and Evolution and I have about 40 email accounts on multiple servers.

Only place I have trouble is Thunderbird on Gentoo. Every other computer sends/receives email just fine.

I'm all about blaming the server whenever possible. Not sure that flies in this case.

I see the update today from 115.5 to 115.6 is requiring me to unmask /dev-libs/icu. Is it possible that icu is what is causing the problem? I am going to wait to update.

Thanks for mentioning this. I'm gonna have a look at that. I could be wrong yet my memory is telling me I saw the same thing.

Seems worth investigating.

There error messages continue further, but I think they all start with a JavaScript problem, that I do not know how to handle.

Kind regards,

The calendar bit at least should be fixed now, see bug 920713.

With this mornings sync dev-libs/icu is no longer needing to be updated to install thunderbird. I updated and all seems fine so far.

Thunderbird has been pretty unstable for me too, the UI is practically unresponsive as soon as I open it and the only way to close thunderbird is to kill the process. I have not had any issues with it till recently. I am running mail-client/thunderbird-115.6.0

Thunderbird has become very slow for me as well. Creating a folder use to be instant. Now it takes ~4 seconds.

At this time I've resolved my problem by restoring a backup when 115.5.1 was installed, then making 115.6.0 and greater. I'm able to check email for now.

Still I need a long term fix.

Considered going to Evolution but it will not run. So I'll get to have a go at fixing that as well.

This is a little bit strange. Thunderbird is reliable and responsive for me and specifically doesn't exhibit the symptoms reported on this thread:
  • Tabs restore just fine.
  • Access to POP, SMTP, and IMAP servers is reliable and fast.
  • Not seeing issues with the calendar (although I'm only a light user of that).
  • Creating folders is instantaneous.
My USE flags and CFLAGS are also similar to what Skippy204 is using:
Code:
mail-client/thunderbird-115.6.0::gentoo was built with the following:
USE="X clang dbus -debug -eme-free -hardened -hwaccel -jack -libproxy -lto openh264 (-pgo) pulseaudio (-selinux) -sndio system-av1 system-harfbuzz (-system-icu) system-jpeg system-libevent system-librnp system-libvpx -system-png (-system-python-libs) system-webp wayland -wifi" ABI_X86="(64)" L10N="-af -ar -ast -be -bg -br -ca -cak -cs -cy -da -de -dsb -el -en-CA en-GB -es-AR -es-ES -es-MX -et -eu -fi -fr -fy -ga -gd -gl -he -hr -hsb -hu -id -is -it -ja -ka -kab -kk -ko -lt -lv -ms -nb -nl -nn -pa -pl -pt-BR -pt-PT -rm -ro -ru -sk -sl -sq -sr -sv -th -tr -uk -uz -vi -zh-CN -zh-TW"
CFLAGS="-march=native -mtune=native -pipe"
CXXFLAGS="-march=native -mtune=native -pipe"
LDFLAGS="-Wl,-O1 -Wl,--as-needed -Wl,--compress-debug-sections=zlib -Wl,-rpath=/usr/lib64/thunderbird,--enable-new-dtags"

Like John R. Graham, I have no problem at all with Thunderbird 115.6.0. Here is the build information in my stable Gentoo Linux installation:

Code:
mail-client/thunderbird-115.6.0::gentoo was built with the following:
USE="X clang dbus openh264 pulseaudio system-av1 system-harfbuzz system-jpeg system-libevent system-librnp system-libvpx system-webp wayland wifi -debug -eme-free -hardened -hwaccel -jack -libproxy -lto (-pgo) (-selinux) -sndio (-system-icu) -system-png (-system-python-libs)" ABI_X86="(64)" L10N="en-GB es-ES pt-BR -af -ar -ast -be -bg -br -ca -cak -cs -cy -da -de -dsb -el -en-CA -es-AR -es-MX -et -eu -fi -fr -fy -ga -gd -gl -he -hr -hsb -hu -id -is -it -ja -ka -kab -kk -ko -lt -lv -ms -nb -nl -nn -pa -pl -pt-PT -rm -ro -ru -sk -sl -sq -sr -sv -th -tr -uk -uz -vi -zh-CN -zh-TW"
CFLAGS="-march=native -pipe"
CXXFLAGS="-march=native -pipe"
LDFLAGS="-Wl,-O1,--as-needed -Wl,--compress-debug-sections=zlib -Wl,-rpath=/usr/lib64/thunderbird,--enable-new-dtags"

I noticed a few weeks back after an update that I lost my tabs as well. I also normally leave "Quick Filter" active, and that had gone away, too. I set Quick Filter so long ago that I forgot that there's a button for it on the right near the top. Press that and it's back. My tabs are back as well, just as they were when they disappeared. I'm not sure if the Quick Filter button jogged something or if it was something else. But I'm back to normally functional, running 115.6.0.

wow, I don't know why but now firefox is totally unresponsive as well. I am not sure if both issues are related but I wouldn't be surprised.

Has anyone progressed on this issue. Both Firefox and Thunderbird have been totally unusable for a few weeks now.

My firefox and thunderbird are both perfectly usable. In fact I'm using the former for this post. Incidentally, I'm only using X11 at the moment. I've also installed Wayland stuff, getting ready to dip my toes in the water with it. But this is my normal Xorg session. Adding the USE flags for Wayland stuff was a non-event as far as X11 functionality is concerned.
Code:
$ emerge -ptv firefox thunderbird

These are the packages that would be merged, in reverse order:

firefox 121.0 is fine here, both wayland and X. I don't use thunderbird.

No issues with thunderbird across multiple systems here. I keep firefox around as a backup browser, but never use it. No wayland.

Code:

[ebuild   R    ] mail-client/thunderbird-115.6.0::gentoo  USE="X clang dbus openh264 pulseaudio system-av1 system-harfbuzz system-jpeg system-libevent system-librnp system-webp -debug -eme-free -hardened -hwaccel -jack -libproxy -lto (-pgo) (-selinux) -sndio (-system-icu) -system-libvpx -system-png (-system-python-libs) -wayland -wifi"

I've actually had one ongoing issue with Thunderbird on occasion, though it's been happening for quite some time...not sure what version it may have started with:

I have my work email and my personal email setup in TB using IMAP. My personal email is on my own web site hosted by a hosting service (using Plesk).

With my personal account ONLY (the work one is fine), I'll occasionally suddenly get a bunch of new emails in my inbox that may have arrived as much as a day earlier. Based on the dates in those emails, they clearly got to my mail server when they should have, so no question it's TB just not picking them up in time. Drives me nuts.

This may or may not be the case, however the date listed by TB is only when it was sent by a User-Agent (mail program). Such a date is not reliable when diagnosing timing issues. Have you been checking the Received lines in the raw headers view (Ctrl+U) of such mails? That will show the real progress between servers.

Yes. When this has happened those received lines have proven that it got to my mail server shortly after it was sent, and TB didn't pick it up...on occasion for the better part of a day.

Nothing about this surprises me given the mozilla devs and their bloated POS rust-ridden bullshit. If it wasn't for the fact that I still need to be able to reply to work emails using HTML (don't even get me started about my hatred for that crap), I'd be using something like claws mail for sure and would never send another non-plain-test email in this lifetime.

I did a world rebuild last night, and thunderbird 115.6.0 is unresponsive. Seems to hang while creating the initial window.

I ran it under gdb and halted it. It seems to be stuck in a read() system call. Assuming that it is trying to read config from .thunderbird.
I renamed .thunderbird to .thunderbird.orig and restarted thunderbird.

It came up with no problems, but of course now I have to set up all my accounts again.

I deleted the new .thunderbird and installed thunderbird-bin. It worked just fine. I wonder what use flags they used.
