hi

Summary:
You may use this to improve the wiki https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/SANE
or fix the most likely broken downloads for media-gfx/xsane-0.999-r5::gentoo

Introduction: I wanted to use my newly aquired scanner. I needed one A4 paper digitialised.

Train of thoughts:

this topic has shown me i need to look somewhere else
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=278375

default values after installing a few minutes ago
Code:

Sienna_Cichlid /home/roman # grep 04a9 /etc/sane.d/genesys.conf
usb 0x04a9 0x2213
usb 0x04a9 0x221c
usb 0x04a9 0x2214
usb 0x04a9 0x1900
#usb 0x04a9 0x2228
usb 0x04a9 0x1904
usb 0x04a9 0x1909
usb 0x04a9 0x1905
usb 0x04a9 0x1907
usb 0x04a9 0x190a
usb 0x04a9 0x190e
usb 0x04a9 0x190f
usb 0x04a9 0x1906
usb 0x04a9 0x221e
usb 0x04a9 0x2229

Does the usb interface see my scanner? yes it does
Code:

Sienna_Cichlid /home/roman # lsusb |grep 04a9
Bus 003 Device 005: ID 04a9:2228 Canon, Inc. CanoScan 4400F

It is not that obvious that a config files prevents a scanner to be found - for the command scanimage

I doubt any long term user will look into a single file -> nano /etc/sane.d/genesys.conf

Code:

Sienna_Cichlid /home/roman # scanimage -L

No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different,
check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the
sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation
which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).

which caused before to emerge more stuff as needed - because of guessing.
sane homepage claims it is genesys only.
Code:

Sienna_Cichlid /home/roman # emerge -av sane-backends

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

I gave up and used my smartphone to take a photo instead of the newly aquired scanner

Just for information.

Regardless futile, as sane-backends installed there is a working portage system with downloads.
This package does not have any downlaods.

I'm just sharing. On purpose in gentoo chat as this is not a support question. I will also most likely not read any response to that.

Code:

Sienna_Cichlid /home/roman # emerge --info|grep Timestamp

xsane dowloads are not broken if a Gentoo mirror is used.
There appears to be some setting in your make.conf which is bypassing all file mirrors which would otherwise help in this specific instance.

Though, it is an ebuild bug to rely on this in the long term and should be reported. A more reliable source is the gitlab page.
