splashmac,

Welcome to Gentoo.

An image on a image sharing sight would be good.

splashmac,

Does it work normally apart from that?

It's unlikely to be software, or it wouldn't just be you, so I suspect failing video hardware.
Are the video artefacts present on an external display, if you can connect one.

It does this before I can log in. And every time I boot it does this.

splashmac,

If that's as far as it ever gets, I suspect RAM problems.
It may just be the contacts on the RAM modules. It may be failed RAM or RAM controller.

It's looking like time to look inside.

Does this have integrated graphics? If so, I can’t replace the video hardware.

splashmac,

We need the model number.

It may have integrated graphics. It most likely uses a part of main RAM for the video RAM.

So this is the very first screenful when booting ? It looks like the framebuffer is filled with scan lines of the wrong length. The dots on successive screen lines don't line up.

Something like that happened to me on two computers, see this post. It was a kernel bug. The screenshot linked in my post is legible although weird, but one of the patches I tested made my screen look like yours. I had to type blind in order to log in.

One kernel had CONFIG_DRM_SIMPLEDRM=y and the other CONFIG_FB_SIMPLE=y, both had CONFIG_SYSFB_SIMPLEFB=y. If you use something else this could be a false lead, but it could be worth looking into the framebuffer options open to you.

Are you able to log in at all ? Can you wgetpaste your dmesg ?
EDIT: And do you get a sane screen when you boot from rescue or install media ?

The kernel used is a bin kernel, maybe I’ll try source compiled kernel. Anyway it doesn’t boot to login. It gets halfway through OpenRC and then spits out the lines. Again first let me try a source compiled kernel.

Ah, okay. So the early display, with the framebuffer, works fine, and the problem starts when the final video driver takes over.

When you did the install, you must have booted from a CDROM or a USB stick. I assume the problem didn't show up then ? If so, comparing .config files, lspci -nnk output and dmesg output between the two kernels could be informative.

Your computer is probably booted up, only the display is garbled. Do you have another machine from which you can ssh into the faulty computer ? That would allow you to collect the above info. If necessary, boot install media and chroot to your system to finish setting it up (emerging openssh and configuring the network, for example).

SSH is enabled by default on gentoo minimal? Not sure if network is configured before the garbled screen.

So to be clear: do you get a garbled screen when booting the Gentoo minimal CD ?

No, I've been using minimal cd as a USB and never has it happened in there.

Anyway new kernel is compiling and I switched to systemd. I'll let you know what that does.

The handbook says this: VIDEO_CARDS
The VIDEO_CARDS USE_EXPAND variable should be configured appropriately depending on the available GPU(s). The Xorg guide covers how to do this. Setting VIDEO_CARDS is not required for a console only install.

Should I be putting a USE variable at that time?

Switched to systemd which boots to no lines and dots but quits at: failed to start initrd-switch-root.service

Entering emergency mode. Exit the shell to continue.
Type "journalctl" to view system logs.
You might want to save "/run/initramfs/rdsosreport.txt" to a USB stick or /boot
after mounting them and attach it to a bug report.

Press Enter for maintenance
(or press Control-D to continue):

When my installation gets to the part on installing grub I get an error that EFI like file isn't found which looks like that file for --target needs. If I change to i386-pc in the target it completes installation. But should I need this EFI/UEFI specification for grub? It's a intel 2006 EFI iMac, so question is where do I get this file and where to put it.

Install GRUB on an UEFI system
$ grub-install --target=[x86_64-efi] --efi-directory=[path/to/efi_directory] --bootloader-id=[GRUB]

[x86_64-efi] is the file for default EFI installation.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fCUv_SK-rb0ULQ5tx6QzQMX7tkJxEC8R/view?usp=sharing

Nevermind, I think this will fix that: A note for UEFI users: running the above command will output the enabled GRUB_PLATFORMS values before emerging. When using UEFI capable systems, users will need to ensure GRUB_PLATFORMS="efi-64" is enabled (as it is the case by default). If that is not the case for the setup, GRUB_PLATFORMS="efi-64" will need to be added to the /etc/portage/make.conf file before emerging GRUB so that the package will be built with EFI functionality:

root #echo 'GRUB_PLATFORMS="efi-64"' >> /etc/portage/make.conf

do these dots and lines disappear? how long they are displayed?

I saw this picture a few times, when videocard is old and rare (savage), and video mode is set wrongly or the system attempts to find the most suitable mode (drivers accept a list of modes, but only a few give a proper picture on the screen)

Lines stay forever. How do I set video mode? I may check what driver the live cd is using and compare it to my setup.

Need to compare kernel settings with live cd one. That can be a long list. It makes sense to compile a new kernel with config from livecd and check if it boots properly.
