Hi, recently, steam refuse to start when I launch the launcher from the menu.
Do you know if a recent steam update broke the launcher ?
I feel as well recently the last Gentoo updates slowed my system.

Try adding en_US.UTF-8 UTF-8 into your /etc/locale.gen and apply the changes by running locale-gen.
I remember seeing a similar issue like this before..
It's odd though that you've been able to run Steam prior this issue.
If the above doesn't work, could you post the contents of ~/.local/share/Steam/logs/bootstrap_log.txt and output of dmesg. |

No error message, but nothing.
I don't think finally the locale are broken, the problem come from steam.

Well, you can't compile steam with debug symbols so....
You can look to see if dmesg is logging anything strange when you launch steam, like Irets suggested.
You can check your portage log to see what exactly was updated recently that steam depends on.
You can ask Valve for help on their github issue tracker for steam linux: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/ |

For a guess, I don't think it's that given it's supposed to be solved, but there was recent issues with nvidia and its cache with steam. Could try to delete ~/.nv and/or ~/.cache/nvidia depending on where it's at just in case.
Also, nvidia-drivers-535.98 was stabled very recently, you can always emerge -1 nvidia-drivers:0/525 to go back to the previous stable in case it may be nvidia-related, not that I've heard of anyone having steam issue with 535.98 (in fact solved other issues for people).
These messages are not much to go by anyhow, so hard to really guess anything (not that I use steam, so I don't really know where you should look). And haven't really heard of issues beside the cache thing lately. |

Hi, so I tried with a downgrade of the nvidia drivers, nothing work again.
I removed as well the directories you recommended me, don't fix anything as well...

Do you have gnome-extra/zenity installed? No visual feedback after a steam --reset without it. May or may not shed some light.

Erm, kinda...
I'm going to be "mostly useless" here, but there was a difference between my cli-shell and gui-shell environments*; this initially made steam behave "oddly" (trying to open windows, but unable to do so) as it had some dependency on hardware rendering (due to a client "update" that ignored previous client settings). I rectified it by making both environments "similar", then got to turn off any "hardware rendering" setting, making the hacky fix I used no longer needed. *This was thought to be caused by my very esoteric set-up, so I kinda ignored it, maybe I shouldn't have, HTH... |
