PostPosted: Tue Apr 11, 2023 1:56 pm    Post subject: setup gvm / openvas scanner Reply with quote

While setting up openvas/gvm I successfully emerged it and setup and started redis and postgres according to description in the wiki. I then let it perform its initial update by issuing gvm-sync-all which took a while, and following I created certs by gvm-manage-certs -a as described per wiki.

Nextsteop (which should take a while too) is to start ospd-openvas, but this one fails and I see the following error in /var/log/messages:
Code:
Apr 11 13:43:39 HOSTNAME OSPD[13410]: ERROR: (ospd_openvas.db) Redis Error: Not possible to connect to the kb.
Apr 11 13:43:39 HOSTNAME /etc/init.d/ospd-openvas[13409]: start-stop-daemon: failed to start `/usr/bin/ospd-openvas'
Apr 11 13:43:39 HOSTNAME /etc/init.d/ospd-openvas[13389]: ERROR: ospd-openvas failed to start

What did I miss? What info can I provide to assist in finding the solution?

Seeing in redis.log:
Code:
2101:M 11 Apr 2023 17:46:12.453 # You requested maxclients of 10000 requiring at least 10032 max file descriptors.
2101:M 11 Apr 2023 17:46:12.453 # Server can't set maximum open files to 10032 because of OS error: Operation not permitted.
2101:M 11 Apr 2023 17:46:12.453 # Current maximum open files is 4096. maxclients has been reduced to 4064 to compensate for low ulimit. If you need higher maxclients increase 'ulimit -n'.

Any additional info that I can provide in order to find out how to fix this?

In the meantime I found the solution to increase openfiles so redis does not complain anymore.

Reading carfefully the setup instructions on the wiki once again, I came across of this:
Code:
Note that this configuration will only allow the 'redis' user to access the socket. We will later fix that by setting a filesystem ACL on the socket, allowing the 'gvm' user, i.e., the user OpenVAS runs under, to access it.

But no info on howto sett a filesystem ACL later. I tried adding gvm user to redis group (gpasswd -a gvm redis) but that did not help either.

Also tried to add the following in rc.conf but that did not work either:
Code:
redis_user="root"
ospd_openvas_user="root"

Code:
Apr 13 16:22:47 HOSTNAME OSPD[2130]: ERROR: (ospd_openvas.db) Redis Error: Not possible to connect to the kb.
Apr 13 16:22:47 HOSTNAME /etc/init.d/ospd-openvas[2129]: start-stop-daemon: failed to start `/usr/bin/ospd-openvas'
Apr 13 16:22:47 HOSTNAME /etc/init.d/ospd-openvas[2108]: ERROR: ospd-openvas failed to start
Neither did adding those lines in the corresponding /etc/conf.d/ files work.

Found the prob. In /etc/openvas/openvas.conf the path for the redis socket is set to /tmp/redis.sock. Correctiog this to /run/redis/redis.sock lets the mentioned service start successfully, so I close the thread and open a new one if needed.

/run/redis/redis.sock seems like a more reasonable path. The path in the openvas configuration ought to default to that. This may require a change to the Gentoo documentation or to the package, depending on where the path in /etc/openvas/openvas.conf originates now.

True, should I open a bug for that? I am still in the process of setting gvm up so I'll see if everything runs smoothly or else I'll be back and make a new thread.

I was vague on whether to open a bug because it is not clear to me why your configuration file specified /tmp/redis.sock. If it is that way because Gentoo set it that way, then yes, open a Gentoo bug report. If it is that way because upstream set it that way, then we need to know where the upstream Redis configuration binds that socket, in order to determine whether we should ask gvm upstream to change the default configuration. If it is that way because you followed a Wiki page that told you to put it there, then the Wiki page needs to be edited.

Thanks for clarification. I will import a snapshot before I started and check and act accordingly but it will take some time. :)

I restarted from scratch. Following my findings and errors in the hope, somebody can help.

/etc/openvas/openvas.conf pointing to /tmp/redis.sock for the database. Changed to /run/redis/redis.sock -> I dont have an account to modify the wiki. Who should I contatc in case the wiki needs to be changed? Or should I report all these findings in a new bug?

I read the following in the wiki and dont know if something needs to be adjusted:
Quote:
Note that this configuration will only allow the 'redis' user to access the socket. We will later fix that by setting a filesystem ACL on the socket, allowing the 'gvm' user, i.e., the user OpenVAS runs under, to access it.
Adding user to redisgroup or start redis and ospd_openvas with root by editing rc.conf didnt work either.

After syncing ospd-openvas service starts successfully but

ps aux | grep openvassd is supposed to show:

Quote:
openvassd: Waiting for incoming connections
openvassd: Serving /var/run/openvassd.sock

Which it doesn't.
openvassd.sock dos not exist on my system.

Service gvmd service crashes when trying to start it.
See gvmd.log: https://bpa.st/WTNVS although postgresql setup has been done according to the wiki page.

ls -l /run/postgresql/.s.PGSQL.5432
Code:
srwxrwxrwx 1 postgres postgres 0 27. Apr 15:58 /run/postgresql/.s.PGSQL.5432

I checked if adding gvm user to postgres group would help, which was not the case.

openvas -s showing:

Should I file a bug because of the path of the redis.sock file in the tmp directory? Another (minor) error in the wiki, I have spotted is, that it states to modify redis.conf which according to wiki should be /etc/redis.conf but I see it exists in /etc/redis/redis.conf

What should I do next? Delete postgresql db and redo the mentioned steps? And if so - how?

Last but not least - is the redis openfiles error described above relevant and should be reported too, as I dont see anything related on the wiki either.

Thanks in advance for your support.
