Not sure where to slot this question, so here goes. When did the news repository stop filtering out non-relevant packages on the news list? A month or so back, I noticed that I had 72 news articles to read. I've looked at them and they're for packages I don't need or use due tp age (This install is from 2020), or not a package I use (systemd related).

My profile is:
Code:
[8]   default/linux/amd64/17.1/desktop/plasma (stable) *

but my eselect news list shows:
Code:

sudo eselect news list
Password:

It's probably something silly I'm missing, but I have no idea what it is. And you can see the ones read were done because they originally were specific to packages I have installed.

Thanks for any help.

My main sync is via rsync. I think the sync for tor may be using git. I'll check on the next update to see what my eix-sync uses for the tor repos.

Thank you for the idea.

There was a bug in portage for a very brief time - https://bugs.gentoo.org/857669 however you managed to install the faulty version now? :P

Don't appear to have the bad version installed. In fact, that version doesn't seem to be available. Is a reversion possible in the current version?
Code:
[I] sys-apps/portage
     Available versions:  3.0.30-r3^t (~)3.0.30-r5^t (~)3.0.32^t (~)3.0.33^t (~)3.0.34^t **9999*l^t {apidoc build doc gentoo-dev +ipc +native-extensions +rsync-verify selinux test xattr PYTHON_TARGETS="pypy3 python3_8 python3_9 python3_10 python3_11"}
     Installed versions:  3.0.34^t(08:17:28 AM 2022-07-21)(ipc native-extensions rsync-verify xattr -apidoc -build -doc -gentoo-dev -selinux -test PYTHON_TARGETS="python3_10 -pypy3 -python3_8 -python3_9 -python3_11")

If you "had" the bad version installed, they get marked as "something meant for your system" and the fixed portage version doesn't undo (recheck) this unfortunately (portage wouldn't know if it's news for something you formerly had installed and may want to keep listed as reference).

Without looking much, two options if want to cleanup I guess:
- reset the state by cleaning out files from /var/lib/gentoo/news/, and next time you use emerge (just emerge -1 some random package or sync) it should give you a clean list of items meant for /your/ system again (save for being marked unread again).
- mark all as read using eselect news read all, then eselect news purge to remove read items entirely (may need to go out of your way if want to re-read old news item given they won't be listed though).
