With the release of Gentoo 1.4 approaching rapidly and questions about upgrades piling up, I was wondering if it might be wise to post an upgrade guide/FAQ now in an attempt to avoid the inevitable questions that will follow the release. We all know that even having something posted on the front page the day of the release will not catch everyone, so perhaps something should be posted very clearly in many places well in advance so that everyone's aware of what's involved in the changeover before it actually occurs. |

Check out the GCC3 forum. There have been a lot of questions about how to upgrade systems from one compiler to another. If an 'upgrade guide' was posted somewhere it would probably just be made of the same info that's been presented there. _________________ if i never try anything, i never learn anything..

If it works enough to actually use, then it should be as simple as:
rm /etc/make.profile
ln -s /usr/portage/profiles/default-1.0-gcc3 /etc/make.profile
emerge rsync
emerge -ep world (check your stuff)
emerge -ep system (check your stuff)
emerge -e system
emerge -e world
At least logically. |

It should be that simple, yes, but we know not everyone knows to do that or will know how to find out without asking first. That's why I suggested that it should be made visible well in advance to avoid confusion and keep the noise on the boards down. (Of course, just to make me look stupid[er], no-one will have any questions when the new release hits.) |

Why the emerge -e system? Isn't system included in the world file? |

i think i would wait for a bit...i never really cared about installing a new OS but everything i have now is really working pretty well...lol...i am not even sure how that happened.
but with so many changes coming in 1.4 i wonder the effects these changes will have on stability and compatability. it would seem prudent to atleast wait for a few weeks after the release to see what bugs are reported and how everything comes together.
just a thought

I think you are right, but the reason I would do that is I would like to see what breaks (if anything) that's really important and try to fix that before I change everything to that format. _________________ if i never try anything, i never learn anything..

That wait is going to SO kill me
But your right, it would be very wise to sit back and watch how the waves come crashing in before grabbing your board. |

yeah i am usually not very good at waiting...but i have had gentoo running longer now then i think any OS ....and it has for the most part been very stable...actually any problems i have had were do to my own stupidity not gentoo.
so i am gonna try and hold out for a while and let 1.4 get around a bit before doing a clean install with it. |
