I tried this a while ago since it takes literally all day to compile TB but it didn't pick up any of my config/history/etc so I froze TB until -bin was on a later version but trying again today it still fails to see the old data.

Has anyone managed to non-destructively move from Thunderbird to Thunderbird-bin?

Yes. It broke the theme and I still don't have it looking quite right, but all the mail and server settings came over cleanly.

Did you have to do anything beyond emerging thunderbird-bin? Did you backup and restore any directories or anything like that?

I don't recall doing any of those, no.

Maybe you should run it from console with "-p" flag, in order to load your existing profile.

I did it last year without any issue. There wasn't any particular intervention from my side. Backup your $HOME/.thunderbird directory first, of course.

That's a capital P, i.e. thunderbird -P or thunderbird-bin -P. That will let you choose your profile in case multiple profiles are installed.

Added: See the output of thunderbird --help or thunderbird-bin --help for list of other options.

I have moved back and forth between locally compiled and -bin multiple times over many years. Currently running thunderbird-bin and very happy with it. I have easily migrated many machines from one version of Linux to another by copying the entire ~/.thunderbird directory.

By default, your configuration should be in ~/.thunderbird.

Try it with lowercase P, you'll be surprised. :D

I'm willing to be wrong, but I don't like being surprised by trying undocumented tricks.

Thanks, everyone. The -p fixed it.
