Typical non-gamer here, only using the PC for serious work. That said, please make sure I don't get anywhere near

Nethack (on Windows, Mac OS, Embedix/Qt on my Zaurus, FreeBSD, Linux: I couldn't possibly care less, this is the penultimate game)
Digger ('emerge digger', simple as that)
Infocom's Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy

Whaddayamean, "all of those are older than the average age of the Linux user base"?

Blobbey Volley is pretty addictive, at least with two players. But I think there is only a windows version, no linux... but I once found a java version of it on the net.

I wish people would use the names of the games instead of the initials. Ok, I think I figured out that CS is counter-strike, but the rest leave me wondering "what is that?"

Atomic Bomberman :D
I really love that game, there are a few linux bombermans in portage which I still have to try.
But this windows version (`95) is the one I have had the most fun playing with.

I find myself getting addicted to puzzle games (Tetris, KLAX, Puzzle Bobble, Bejeweled, etc.) whenever I try a new one. Perhaps this is because I'm a classic gaming freak, and these are the closest that come to the games of old, back when you only had one joystick and a couple of buttons, and the games didn't require months and ten zillion button combinations to master.

Most addictive linux game
Enemy Territory

It's so hard to get school work done when you're up until 5am playing this game every night. :( Go ID

Best game ever
X-Com: Apocalypse

Great sequel to the original X-Com. The real-time option is great so you don't have to spend 6 hours securing a crashed spacecraft.

The most addictive game I've played under Linux has got to be Neverwinter Nights.

Most addictive game ever for me was Dark Age of Camelot (an MMORPG for Windows),

Honorable mentions go out to:
the Gameboy version of Tetris
Most anything by Psygnosis for the Amiga (Blood Money, Lemmings, Shadow of the Beast series, etc.)
The Bards Tale (I played it on a C64, but it was out for most platforms at the time IIRC)

I still play the RA3 mod for Quake3...there's just something about the speed in that game. Although I'm sure some 13 year old will kick my ass and I'll stop playing next week again.

In terms of addictive, there seem to be times when I simply can't stop playing ADOM. I played it pretty much non-stop last weekend, and I still haven't gotten anywhere near completing it :x

windows: Counter Strike or in my early computer days Transport Tycoon Deluxe
linux: ET r0x, it's free and even better, it runs native under linux
__THE__ reason why I have windows, is games, but ET is changing that
I play less CS (also because of version 1.6), boot windows about once a week, but I also play some warcraft III, but I play some other games just a few days when I go to a lan, most of the time they don't work under linux :(

Scorched3D.

And StepMania... but that's pretty shameful so I don't know why I would admit to it.

Elite - the original space trading game.

1982, BBC Micro Model B (32K), loaded from cassette. I got thousands of stars, many enemies and a genre that's lasted and spawned countless imitations.

That's what EVNova is, top-down style!

Promode (cpma) mod for Q3.

It is THE fastest insane reflex purely visceral multiplayer deathmatch game there is.

Don't play if you want graphics, play if you want a huge skill learning curve and mind bogglingly fast combat and trick jumps.

Sigh...
Here we go, rant mode ON :)

I'll have to add a "me too" for CS. Oh the hours wasted on it  Although, ever since 1.6 came out, I havent played it nearly as much; almost not at all. Having it go from working perfectly to not working at alll god damn #$@$ steam. I just can't be bothered to try and get it working again. God damn Valve!

Anyways, I'll have to also give honorable mentions to Fallout 1 & 2, Grim Fandango, Enemy Terriotry, ST: KoTOR which isn't fantastic, but it's not bad. On Second thought I don't think it belongs in the same catagory as Grim Fandango and Fallout.

I cant believe I lost my Fallout 2 save games... TWICE! I'll finish it one of these days, but those damn sewar rats are anonying :(

As for the oldies: Out of this World (this game just blew my mind back in the day!), Legend of Zelda: A Link to the past, Monkey Island, Super Metroid, Chrono Trigger etc....

Okay I think I'll stop ranting right about now.
