Hi, I have spotify installed and decided to also emerge spotify-tray. When I run Spotify from terminal I receive the message
Code:
Launching spotify with generic systray integration.

** (spotify-tray:32004): CRITICAL **: 15:30:43.480: No X11 display found. Quitting.

I have set in make.conf the X USE flag and I have installed xwayland so I don't see why I can't emulate the Xorg session.
Is there something that I'm missing?

Found a solution, I also had media-sound/spotify-tray installed so I ran;

Code:
emerge --depclean media-sound/spotify-tray

Now it opens, does ask for kwallet password though

Yea, I also figured that removing spotify-tray would fix it.

Still its a mystery why does the crash happen.

What crashes? The original report just says that spotify-tray encounters a CRITICAL error, then explicitly quits because it cannot continue. When in that situation, do any X11 applications work? It was my understanding that while XWayland can allow you to display an X11 application on a Wayland display, that it does not automatically come into existence at the moment of need. You need XWayland running and offering service at the time the X11-using application asks for it.

Hey Hu, at the time I opened this issue I wasn't as skilled. Then it fell to oblivion so I didn't update it.

Yea, if you have Spotify and spotify-tray installed (and as far as I was able to experiment) this happens on Wayland: if you launch Spotify from a menu (i.e. Rofi) it silently crashes without even presenting the UI, and the error message I wrote is the output produced by launching Spotify from the terminal

Hello people.. I am aware that it is 2 months later but I do want to mention that it is most likely an upstream issue... So I reported it to the upstream GitHub repo's owner, here. Maybe it can actually be resolved.

There will be no Wayland support for spotify-tray, ever, According to the developer in a comment in the issue I linked in the above reply, spotify-tray uses functions defined in X that are not replicated in Wayland, and cannot be done through XWayland for security reasons. Someone else may find a better solution to the issue, but that will likely require a rewrite of the entire codebase.

SimPilotAdamT, thanks. I use a custom Waybar module for Spotify now. If you want I can share it. It works fairly good

sicr0 I would have loved to, but I use the built-in KDE Plasma panels so I can't use anything from Waybar... post your configs anyway, I'm sure someone is using Waybar out there and wants this kind of functionality

Btw,
Code:
GDK_BACKEND=x11 spotify
mostly works as a dirty workaround.

In the future feel free to report such bugs on bugs.gentoo.org, I don't browse the forums regularly so I can help better/quicker through a properly assigned bug report. I have known about this issue for a while and had even already reported it upstream: https://github.com/tsmetana/spotify-tray/issues/32
