8 year old gentoo system with no remarkable issues. No changes to the system of any kind (config file changes, migrations, etc). Occurred after regular doing monthly updates using the normal emerge -u @world method.

eselect command such as 'wine list' generates normal output of installed wine version.

eselect wine set 8 output:
Code:

!!! Error: Missing listing of man symlinks
exiting

eselect java-vm set 1
Code:
!!! Error: Usage <user|system> <VM>
exiting

eselect kernel set works as expected.

Not sure how to fix this, searching around for other issues with eselect. Re-emerging eselect-wine does not resolve the issue. Not sure how to approach or fix the issue.

The java-vm can be set for user or system, so correct command is eselect java-vm set user 1 or eselect java-vm set system 1.

This resolved the java-vm issue without error.

Unsure how to proceed with eselect-wine. Revising the thread title given this appears to be specific to eselect-wine.

Looks like something broken under '/etc/eselect/wine/', probably '/etc/eselect/wine/links/'.

I'd try moving that dir out and trying again. It might be interesting to keep the current files at hand so they can be compared to the new.

I saw someone else hit something like this recently, but I forget if the issue looked the same at all or not. Either way, something was borked there that time too.

Fully unmerging and then merging eselect-wine did not resolve the issue.

Fully unmerging and then merging virtual/wine did not resolve the issue.

Manually removing /etc/eselect/wine/ and then re-emerging eselect-wine and re-emerging wine-staging created a working wine eselect tool. The only challenge is that the eselect list is not populated unless I re-emerge each package for the wine virtual slot (i.e. wine-staging version X, wine-vanilla version Y, etc). I only really needed to rebuild wine-staging though for my desired use, so the workaround was not a big deal.

I retained the broken configuration files. The /etc/eselect/wine/links/staging file is character-for-character identical between broken and working folder.

The broken file appears to be /etc/eselect/wine/links/wine

In the broken implementation, the file contents are:

Code:
# Configuration file for eselect
# This file has been automatically generated.
symlink_dirs="man"
bin=""
man=""
include=""

In the working implementation, the file contents is:
Code:
# Configuration file for eselect
# This file has been automatically generated.
symlink_dirs="bin man include"
bin=" /usr/bin/function_grep.pl /usr/bin/msidb /usr/bin/msiexec /usr/bin/notepad /usr/bin/regedit /usr/bin/regsvr32 /usr/bin/widl /usr/bin/wine /usr/bin/wine64 /usr/bin/wine64-preloader /usr/bin/wineboot /usr/bin/winebuild /usr/bin/winecfg /usr/bin/wineconsole /usr/bin/winecpp /usr/bin/winedbg /usr/bin/winedump /usr/bin/winefile /usr/bin/wineg++ /usr/bin/winegcc /usr/bin/winemaker /usr/bin/winemine /usr/bin/winepath /usr/bin/wine-preloader /usr/bin/wineserver /usr/bin/wmc /usr/bin/wrc"

Good that the issue was indeed lurking there, and thank you for posting the differences!

I have no immediate ideas of what could have caused that, but it does seem like valuable information.
