unmute does not unmute the speaker

Greetings All,

There is a minor issue that has plagued me forever. It's finally time to scratch this itch.

When I click the mute button on my notebook, both the master volume and the speaker volume are set to zero, as can be plainly seen in kmix (version 21.12.3).

When I click the mute button again to unmute, only the master volume is unmuted, but not the speaker volume. Then I have to go open the mixer channels dialog and restore it manually.

Does anyone know how to change the settings so that either:
1) the mute operation applies only to the master channel and not the speaker, or
2) the unmute operation applies to both the master channel and the speaker

More generally, what is the message/event chain between the mute button and the execution of the mute operation?
