Hello,

maybe someone has a hint for me. I've transferred my Gentoo installation from HDD to SSD. The transfer was done using "dd". The system has started without problem, at first. But then on second start my Xorg crashed. After reboot again crash. On third reboot everything working fine again. And so on. 2-3 times Xorg starts without any problem, then couple of times it crashes and then again works. With HDD I've never seen anything like this.

Only Xorg crashes. After crash I can switch to linux console and there everything appears to be fine. I'm using lightdm.

Is this a race-condition of some kind? Any recommendations what I could try?

I suppose your system completes the boot before the DE has time to start.
Try connecting an external usb drive and see if your problem still persists.
Maybe not necessary but try installing and enabling @boot
Code:

sys-apps/haveged

its an entropy daemon but maybe it will delay a bit your boot to give enough time to X to start.

This was your first mistake. :)

What kind of crash is this? What is written to the Xorg logs? Does dmesg report anything bad?

Assuming you still have the original, re-partition and format the SSD to suit your preferences, then rsync as shown in the following arch wiki page:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/rsync#Full_system_backup
After the rsync, edit /etc/fstab as needed and setup booting.

My actual preference would be to backup the original system to a stage4-equivalent tarball, because I believe users should always have current backups. There has been a lot of exchange the last few months here in the forums about how users make their backups.

Thank you for all suggestion. I'll keep those in mind for the future. Right now the problem is gone. Last time I've seen it on Tuesday, since then every boot is successful.
