|
|
Hi,
I have several machines with Gentoo. And I noticed that on one of them, after updating the same packages, etc-update is not showing some files.
For example, the package sys-apps/baselayout. I updated it on all the machines, and on all others, except one, there was a warning that etc-update needs my decision about changing the file /etc/hosts. On one machine - nothing; no warning.
Yes, the file /etc/hosts on that machine contains non-default entries (IPs, hostnames).
If I launch etc-update on that machine manually, it says "Nothing left to do".
I compared values of the variable CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK - it is the same.
What could be the reason of the different behaviour?
There are also other files; etc/hosts is not the only one. _________________ A wife asks her husband, a programmer:

| Is the problem that Portage is not generating a file to be merged, or is the problem that etc-update refuses to see the generated file? Your post starts out sounding like the latter, but your body description seems more like the former. If Portage decides that a file doesn't need an update, and doesn't drop the ._cfgNNNNN_ replacement, then etc-update legitimately has nothing to do. |

Hu,
Thanks for the hint how to look at the issue on the "ALL IS FILE" level
| Hu wrote: | | Is the problem that Portage is not generating a file to be merged, or is the problem that etc-update refuses to see the generated file? |
The former.
| Code: | # emerge -v sys-apps/baselayout
<many words skipped>
# ls -al /etc/ | grep cfg
# |
EDIT
Though, it's not that easy. I repeated the same commands on another machine, where etc-update was working, and got the same (zero) result.
EDIT2
I found also another oddity. (Having noticed that I forgot to add -1 to emerge)
| Code: | # emerge -v sys-apps/baselayout
<many words skipped>
# cat /var/lib/portage/world | grep baselayout
# |
Why isn't it being added to world?
EDIT3
I use a script-wrapper around emerge. But I think it can't be the cause...
EDIT4
No, that's not it. I disabled the wrapper, and got all the same oddities. _________________ A wife asks her husband, a programmer:

...So, if nobody says nothing, should I file a bug?
Could somebody please repeat these commands and show the output?
| Code: | # emerge -v sys-apps/baselayout
# ls -al /etc/ | grep cfg |
| Code: | # emerge -v sys-apps/baselayout
# cat /var/lib/portage/world | grep baselayout |

| Portage has some strategy to avoid producing the same config file twice. For instance, if you once skipped a config-change then on re-emerge, the same new config-file will not be offered again. Pass --noconfmem to emerge to produce the files unconditionally. |

It worked. Thanks!
It remains to understand why baselayout is not being added to world... _________________ A wife asks her husband, a programmer:
