I have installed Gentoo multiple times previously and the instructions on how to set up Xorg from the wiki always worked. Recently, I reinstalled the system copying my kernel config and .xinitrc (both of which worked perfectly with X before). However, this time I am constantly getting a fatal server error: "Cannot run in framebuffer mode. Please specify busIDs for all framebuffer devices". I know that is cannot be an error with the groups my user is in, nor can it be the kernel configuration. However, I cannot think of any reason besides that.

~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log

Please post the output of 'emerge --info' as well as the output of 'dmesg'. You may want to use wgetpaste for the latter.

TimCve,

It looks like your kernel is missing DPM support or dmesg would show the nouveau framebuffer drive in use.
Its using EFI framebuffer instead.

Code:
[   709.519] (--) PCI: (0@0:2:0) 8086:3e92: ...
[   709.520] (--) PCI:*(1@0:0:0) 10de:1c82: ...

That could be a warning sing that you have an Optimus graphics system in a laptop.
In that case the nvidia GPU cannot be used alone. You will need the Optimus guide on the wiki.

The mistake was actually very simple and stupid. I guess I forgot to make modules_install and the nouveau driver just didn't work. Thanks for the help.
