|
|
Dear all,
I would like to get rid of Gnome and am looking for less bloaty (no mail-client/evolution), lightweight alternatives.
Thanks for sharing your experiences and different lightweight setups that work out for you.
As the Gentoo wiki says "a custom graphical environment can be assembled if preferred, i.e. Xorg could be used with a window manager and selected desktop utilities" I also wonder how this custom environment might look like.
Could you e.g. replace Nautilus with a terminal file explorer?
Edit: Just found this reddit post, with a similar question and different solutions.
https://www.reddit.com/r/swaywm/comments/eg0efb/what_components_do_i_need_to_assemble_a_complete/
My ideas so far:
1. Gnome-light
2. Enlightenment
3. (Custom Environment?)
Looking forward to your replies.

great, this quite empowers me to remove gnome.
How did you solve these problems:
- File explorer dialog of firefox -> I tried to set ui.allow_platform_file_picker to false in about:config in Firefox, but it doesnt work
- which eselect profile do you use without gnome?
Thank you for your answers.

I dont use Firefox so I dont about that. I use the default profile default/linux/amd64/17.1/no-multilib and sets my own use flags per package in package use and make.conf |

interesting...whats your browser then?
which additional use flags do I need when I switch from profile default/linux/amd64/desktop to default/linux/amd64/17.1/no-multilib? I'm quite an ordinary user (web/calender/office).
I guess this reduces the systems' weight. |

What is the problem with filechooser? Default settings, file chooser opens the proper window to select files (in wayfire).
desktop profile. Neither gnome nor kde. |

You might find it easier to maintain your system with desktop profile:
Code: | [5] default/linux/amd64/17.1/desktop (stable) |
