Hi folks,

After a long time not playing Minecraft I started the game the other day and was quite surprised to see it running at just 10 to 20 fps. :( My specs:

- Intel i7-4770 w/ 16 GB RAM
- Nvidia GTX 1060 w/ 6 GB RAM
- x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-470.57.02
- Gentoo-sources 5.10.61 on an up-to-date Gentoo system
- Minecraft 1.17.1 (set to run w/ bundled Java 1.16.x)

When I last played Minecraft (quite a number of months ago), the game was running at 200+ fps. Trying out couple of things I finally found that obviously Kernel 5.10.x is causing the fps problem. When switching to older Kernel 4.19.205 the game gets back to the known 200+ fps.

Anybody else having encountered a problem with kernel 5.10.x? Although the debug screen [F3] shows that the Nvidia drivers are loaded fine, could it still be that internally the MESA drivers are used?

[Edit] Kernel 5.4.143 doesn't have performance issues, either. It's just 5.10.x.

I would start off by comparing (diff | less) kernel configs to try and dissect the change, check thoroughly check every changed entry with the slightest chance to affect fps so drastically

Made a quick vimdiff between
Code:
linux-5.10.61-gentoo/.config and
linux-5.4.143-gentoo/.config

However, I couldn't really find anything which may relate to the performance issue. OTOH, I am not an expert in kernel configurations.

I am going to stick to 5.4.x for the time being. Or I may test unstable gentoo-sources 5.14.x if I find time.

Maybe try gentoo-kernel-bin? You wouldn't need to compile it, so it should be a quick test.

I run it and it's very nice performance-wise. I never played Minecraft in my life, though :)

Kind regards,
Seb

Well, yes, this helped! Got back my fps at around 200+.

Need to find out what setting(s) in my kernel's .config caused the issue. Thnx for this hint!
