PostPosted: Sat Sep 04, 2021 4:17 am    Post subject: startx is frozen Reply with quote

Hi everyone,

I got a bit of an error involving startx. After an update of nvidia-drivers my gentoo system does not pass Lightdm; so I need to login using tty (ctrl + alt + f*). When I try to run startx an error about this xf86openconsole switching vt failed was displayed.

Reading some forums I found that using
Code:
 USE="elogind" emerge -uDNav @world
could help me out. It does not display the xf86problem anymore but still startx is frozen

When I type startx basically get stuck with the following text:

Code:

You have Intel and nVidia GPUs. From the log fragment above, it looks like an Optimus graphics system.
In the Optimus arrangement, the nVidia GPU has no connections to the display at all and cannot be used on its own.
The Intel GPU is use to refresh the display at all times and the nVidia GPU may be used to render the image into the pixel buffer.

If you have an Optimus graphics system, follow the Optimus page on the wiki.

NeddySeagoon, just a little update for this issue:

I read and follow the instructions for NIVIDIA/OPtimus wiki https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/NVIDIA/Optimus, but I still having the same issues with the blinking cursor.

I also noticed a typo on my make.conf and instead of VIDEO_CARDS="nvidia" I had VIDEOS_CARDS="nvidia", so I re-emerge xorg-server and xorg-drivers. Now when I boot, there is a red asterisk that said that the nvidia module failed to load, however you can run commands like nvidia-smi and nvidia-xconfig.

New information in the log appears specially something regarding a xf86enableioports failed to set iopl

Also, for some strange reason, my elongind service was not at boot runlevel, I already fix[/profile] that.

I am kinda stuck, Do you want me to post more outputs about my system? If so, which logs/ouputs do you recommend me?

Hieronymus Bosch,

Your log should show that The intel chipset is using the modesetting driver and that the nVidia chipset is using NVIDIA.
The Intel GPU setup is missing from the log.

In one of your earlier logs you had
Code:
[   424.662] (==) Log file: "/home/gerson/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.1.log", Time: Fri Sep  3 21:18:30 2021
[   424.662] (==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf"
[   424.663] (==) Using config directory: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d"
[   424.663] (==) Using system config directory "/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d"

The log file and config file names are missing in your last log. You must use a config file because Xorg will not autoconfigure both GPUs.
The Xorg preferred drives list is missing too, which suggests its finding at least a Section Device in a config file somewhere.

Thanks for the remarks, doing some research I found that https://bugs.gentoo.org/809482 I am not alone with the issue. The descriptions of the symptoms are similar

Quote:

Booting with the above version of nvidia-drivers results in an unusable system: no X server, and even my getty virtual consoles don't appear. (vt7 is 100% black, vt1 and vt2 are lighter black, as if the backlight is on). I can ssh in, but /var/log/Xorg.0.log shows nothing useful. Reverting to 460.91.03 solves the problem.

I will try something else, before reverting back to 460.91.03. In case of something occurs I will post it here.

After backtracking to version 460.x, the Nvidia driver does not shows the red asterisk anymore. Now when I type startx -- vt7 the screen continues with the cursor, however when I return back to the original tty I obtain the following:

Code:

Warning:    Could not resolve keysym XF86KbdLcdMacro1
Warning:    Could not resolve keysym XF86KbdLcdMacro2
Warning:    Could not resolve keysym XF86KbdLcdMacro3
...
Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server
Could not find provider with modesetting

I enabled the option nvidia-drm modeset=1 and the error about the modesetting is now gone.

I guess I almost there :/

Hieronymus Bosch,

Don't guess, look in your Xorg log. :)

Both the Intel and nVidia chipsets should be configured.
Intel with the modesetting driver and nVidia with the nvidia driver.

Without the Intel chipset you will not get anything other than a blank display.

Even if everything looks good, how does startx know what to do?
You need either a ~/.xinitrc file or to provide the default programs that startx tries to run.
That's
Code:
emerge twm xterm xclock

Hint: twm is quite usable but it only uses the primary mouse button.
