Not being a total n00b to linux, but a total n00b to AMD, can anyone recommend the best processor setting for an AthlonXP 2800 for the kernel config? I think I should be able to take regular Athlon, but I noticed that genkernel wanted to make it 386. Normally I would totally disregard genkernel, but this time it's making me stop and ponder... Thanks for any help! _________________ man goes into cage, cage goes into salsa, shark's in the salsa.. our shark.. |

Genkernel always picks i386 (along with a bunch of other non-optimal settings).
If you want the best performance, you should compile the kernel manually.
ps. Yes, you want the cpu type set to athlon in the kernel. |

Groovy, thanks! I always do compile manually normally, but I was curious what genkernel would pick since I was a little unsure... I went ahead and compiled it as Athlon and it seems to be running fine now, other than some "Unable to set DMA mode" crap I need to contend with. <sigh> Thanks again! _________________ man goes into cage, cage goes into salsa, shark's in the salsa.. our shark.. |

Look in the IDE chipset section. In order for DMA to work correctly, you need to enable support for the correct IDE chipset(s) for your motherboard. |

I often read this.
Hasn't anyone heard of the --config option of genkernel?
Use this to modify the kernel options - genkernel will then do the makes automatically _________________ my gentoo boxes
