I wasn't sure if I should post this in unsupported software or here. If in the wrong sub-forum mods please move.
I am trying to find a way to mount and decrypt a Win 10 Home Edition partition. Google-Fu gives some returns on how to do it. This method, dislocker, seems the most prevalent.

However, dislocker seems to only access BitLocker. But, BitLocker isn't available on Windows 10 Home edition. Windows 10 uses "device encryption" in its security settings.

I suspect that disk encryption only uses User/Pass as the key to decrypt the volume. I have the added complexity in that I was using Yubikey to login to local on Win 10. So User/Pass +Yubikey.
BUT, all of the Yubikey documentation indicates that the yubikey has nothing to do with the disk encryption. (On a side note, it is actually easily bypassed so in my mind that confirms that.)
Is anyone familiar with dislocker? Or more importantly. does anyone know how I can mount and decrypt this volume? I am trying to back it up before wiping a disk.
Context
This is related to a failed Dual Boot install I attempted that borked my Windows boot.

If you have some space in your INTERNAL drive create an ntfs3g partition and reinstall win10 home in THAT partition with the sole purpose of accessing the encrypted windows volume and moving its data to an unencrypted ntfs partition which then you can easily mount from Gentoo with ntfs3g
That or pray that
dislocker
works also for your win10 partition.
I dont see any other way out for you.....

| I have successfully used dislocker on Gentoo to access encrypted W10 drives. Don't remember the details, I might have some notes on a Gentoo laptop in the office. OTOH there seem to be a good few resources on the web that explain how to use it. |

Thank you alamahant. I am going to give this a shot before messing with dislocker but can you elaborate a little?
I did have another free partition with adequate space. I formatted it as NTFS and reinstalled Win 10. That went without a hitch.
But how exactly am I now accessing the encrypted drive? I have the same issue with the new Win 10 boot that I do from the Linux side. There isn't a way to mount that partition. Or am I missing something?
The only thing that has changed now is that the Win bootloader is back. It gives me the option to choose which Win installation to boot. Of course, only the new one will boot. I can still boot into Linux from the UEFI menu or drilling deeper into the advanced menu options of the Win 10 bootloader.
I'm a bit lost on the Win side of the problem so if you can clarify I'd appreciate it. And of course...thanks again. |

Ah OK. I see what is going on. There is a miscommunication.
Windows 10 Home Edition does not have BitLocker. Only Win10 Professional and Enterprise. Win 10 Home Edition encrypts under a security menu dialogue which is simply "On/Off".
So, yes, I do know my User/Pass, etc. But no, I can't do what they are doing in that video because 1) I don't get a decrypt submenu option (because no BitLocker) and of course goes without saying all of the Bitlocker dialogue menus stuff being referenced also doesn't exist.
I haven't given up yet but I am really starting to think this drive may be unrecoverable. I don't know exactly how or why but I have strong suspicion that when I partitioned the disk for Gentoo it borked the Optane, which as best I can discern is actually a RAID disk, killing some piece of data on disk that was needed for the original Win 10 OS. Or the partitioning did, and the Optane issue is just coincidental.
Thoughts? |
