Many of my questions are spoilt by what I presume are well-intended, enthusiastic but completely ill-informed and useless answers. It would be really helpful if the OP of the thread had the option to delete these answers, so that the question still appears on the 'unanswered posts' search. _________________ Michael Mounteney |

Can you report some examples?
Anyway delete posts is not in the policy of this forum, even we Moderators/Site Admins at most move them and rarely delete them (usually the massive spam bot posts).
This feature of yours would also lead to the problem that someone might delete posts just because they think they are useless - even though they may not be - or because they don't like the user who posted them.
You could do - after some time - a topic bump so that it returns to the top of the forum. _________________ Questions are guaranteed in life; Answers aren't. |

mounty1,
The posters of well-intended, enthusiastic but completely ill-informed and useless answers need to be educated, not have their posts deleted.
Such is the price of participating in the forums.
Post deletion is the start of the slippery slope into censorship.
Even OTW is hidden from the public gaze, not deleted. _________________ Regards,

Couldn't agree more, I've always highly appreciated this here in Gentoo forums. But what about moderators shadow-editing posts? This is done here, and it falls into same category. _________________ My Gentoo installation notes.

Jaglover,
We fix formatting, that's all.
Editing content runs the risk of Gentoo being perceived to have editorial control of the forums.
That could lead to the forums being classified as a publisher, with all the liabilities of publishers. _________________ Regards,

My posts have been edited without any notice. Once a web link was added, another time a web link was removed. I agree moderators can remove content at their discretion, it is their task to keep forums legal, etc. But why without notice? Not even a PM. I believe users who have violated rules should be made aware of their mistakes.
I'm not hostile and I don't think the details should be discussed here. Merely expressing my opinion and giving you heads-up. _________________ My Gentoo installation notes.
