I plugged an HC-05 module into one of my 3D printers yesterday, aiming to get it working as a wireless serial connection. Android and Windows 10 both connected to it easily enough with some variation of this combination of steps: (1) pair the device, (2) grab an app that knows how to connect to it, and (3) use the app to connect. Gentoo was a bit more of a challenge, as the Bluetooth documentation appears to be rather stale. By enabling deprecated options, I was able to get it working as described here:

https://alfter.us/2021/05/31/connecting-to-bluetooth-serial-devices-on-gentoo-linux/

On the one hand, I shouldn't have to use deprecated methods to do this. On the other hand, whatever newer methods are available haven't been documented anywhere. Most other Bluetooth devices (mice, headphones, cellphones, etc.) pair up just fine. Are Bluetooth serial connections getting left by the wayside, or is there a better-supported method than what I've documented above?

Think it's the latter but focusing on gui... Like in, using blueman. Mostly due to the realization a lot of the stuff needs to be integrated together, specifically the original CLI-based pairing has really been clunky in Linux, and the GUI through blueman was okay. Then there's the problem of maintaining pairings in persistent storage of which the original CLI just completely fails at, as you found. The newer bluez handles pairing differently now and keeps an internal system-centric store of pairings now...

That being said, would be interesting to learn of any new CLI API available...
