This gives my efibootmgr -v commmand :

Gentoo is on the Samsung EVO 970 PLUS with GPT and different partitions. nvme0n1p1 is /boot and nvme0n1p8 is /root futher there are also on this SSD backup from root and boot and one /home partition. He complains he cannot find the file of 5.10.27.xxx
In the computer can in a seperate bay 1 ssd (SATA) and one classical harddisk (SATA) be.
The computer refuses to boot my new kernel 5.10.27, it is compiled and everything is present in /boot, the older ones 5.4.23 and 5.4.22 he boots without problems strangely enough.
I think it is in the bootmgr since he boot boot0014 and Boot0010 before Boot0017. and Boot0000.
In the kernel is also no problem because the other kernels are also 5.10.27 but from an earlier date.
In the CD/DVD is no disc. (BOOT0018)
My questions:
What is BOOT0000 gentoo (is this the VFAT32 partition ?)
Boot0017 should be '/' ?
What is VenHw(99.....) ?
Why UEFI O.S.
Why Harddrive when SSD ?

or is Boot0014 and Boot0010 the discs in the bay ? Why listed even if they aren't present ?
I think he should boot BOOT0017 (nvme0n1p8 ?) but I am not sure, because I do not see the NVME0n1p1 partition on the same drive.
Can someone clear this up for me, and yes I emptied the bays without succes.
Thnx to explain it for me I tried the wike but is not clear on this.
Yes I know how to delete efibootmgr -b 14 -B f.exaple but I need to be sure.
Why does efibootmgr does not scan automatic all valid partitions ?
Since I have changed a lot on the SSD I do not know what it should be.

The motherboard is ASROCK Phantom gaming X with AMD 3900X if that matters.
Thnx for shining a light on this.

My first question would be: Who is "he" ? ... in:
Quote:

Is it your UEFI BIOS itself or is it a bootmanager like e.g. grub2 ?
Do you know all prerequisites for an UEFI boot ?
If you would tell us, what you did before, it would help us: e.g. what did you boot last and how did it boot ? How did you install your new kernel ?

Hi
the only possibly bootable entries are 0010 and 0014.
All rest do not seem to have booting potential.
Two points
1.Do you use grub?
2.where do you mount the efi partition?

grub2
i did nothing special, installing with a script based on the wiki for systemd and grub2. It worked before multiple times.
The UEFI BIOS is configurated to start on NVME0n1 before anything else.
So normally it would start on nvme0n1p1(fat32), (but not nvme0n1p8 (ext4)).

the file vmlinuzxxxx sits on the fat32 in /boot as all the rest of vmlinuz versions who he does find.
in /boot/EFI/boot is BOOTX64.EFI
in /boot is --EFI
EFI/boot is BOOTX64.EFI 4 may
--grub/ grub.cfg (7 may)
grubenv (3 mars)
/fonts
/locale (4 may)
/themes
/x86_64-efi (4may)
you wrote:

Maybe not, otherwise i would not have this problem I think. My biggest problem is he does find in the same directory the other files AND boot from them without a problem. If he would not boot none of them then it was clear.
On the /root the /boot is empty with exemption 1 file 'THIS IS NOT BOOT.txt'
my grub.cfg : i cannot find an error.
Code:

Kernel was installed as usual through emerge -avuDNU @world
link is ok usr/src/linux --> /usr/src/linux-5.10.27-gentoo with eeselect kernel list because the previously kernel was also 5.10.27 with slightly other parameter and is found.
kernel compiles normal, comes also in /boot with make install.
(thnx for looking pietinger) two eyes see more than one ;-)

/boot or /dev/nvme0n1p1 is mounted on the root partition nvme0n1p8 under /boot of course.

Ok
Kindly please try this
First chroot into your system.
Mount the ESP --the fat32 partition on boot/efi
Code:

mkdir /boot/efi
mount /dev/nvme0n1p1 /boot/efi
grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot/efi --bootloader-id=gentoo --recheck
grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
###Please remember to adjust your fstab

Grub will itself create nice efibootmgr entries and directory in /boot/efi/EFI/gentoo containing the grubx64.efi(=efi bootloader)

If you need your backup also bootable then please chroot into the backup repeat same changing only --bootloader-id=backup?.
You do not really need the BOOT directory inside the efi partition. It is only used as a failover option in case all rest fails.
To adjust the booting order please use
Code:

efibootmgr -o <id1>,<id2>,<etc>

To pickup your next boot please use
Code:

efibootmgr -n <boot-id>

NOTE the way you had it configured before all kernel initrd and grub stuff were inside the ESP
What you should do is after mounting the esp on /boot/efi
Code:

cd /boot/efi
mv vmlinuz* config* System* grub* init* ../

All t these stuff should be in /boot directory and inside /boot/efi directory you should only see a dir named "EFI"

Ok
Kindly please try this
First chroot into your system.

Please let me add this:
Second delete old UEFI entries, because usually UEFI will not set a new entry named "gentoo" when there is an old one with the same title.

my vmLinuz entries were all under /boot not in /boot/efi.
And I use vmlinuz-5.10.27-gentooSYSTEMD_ZEN_210502 as entry not gentoo or backup as well in the menu of grub as for the files.
My /boot contains
Code:

 vmlinuz-5.10.27-gentooSYSTEMD_ZEN_210502
 vmlinuz-5.10.27-gentooSYSTEMD_ZEN_210502.old
 vmlinuz-5.10.27-gentooSYSTEMD_ZEN_210501
 vmlinuz-5.10.27-gentooSYSTEMD_ZEN_210423
 vmlinuz-5.10.27-gentooSYSTEMD_ZEN_210422
 system.map-5.10.27-gentooSYSTEMD_ZEN_210502
 system.map-5.10.27-gentooSYSTEMD_ZEN_210502.old
 system.map-5.10.27-gentooSYSTEMD_ZEN_210501
 system.map-5.10.27-gentooSYSTEMD_ZEN_210423
 system.map-5.10.27-gentooSYSTEMD_ZEN_210422
amd-uc.img
initramfs-5.10.27-gentoo-x86_64.img (normally not used)
and the respective config files as documentation.
config-5.10.27-gentooSYSTEMD_ZEN_210502

I do not use 'gentoo' or 'backup' but maybe efibootmgr does that.
I adapted and got to this :
Let's try it.
Code:
efibootmgr -v
BootNext: 0000
BootCurrent: 0014
Timeout: 1 seconds
BootOrder: 0000,0010,0018
Boot0000* gentoo        VenHw(99e275e7-75a0-4b37-a2e6-c5385e6c00cb)
Boot0010* UEFI OS       HD(1,GPT,8083ce3e-3bee-46c3-ade0-8b2a950a3d46,0x200800,0x3d36000)/File(\EFI\BOOT\BOOTX64.EFI)..BO
Boot0018* CD/DVD Drive  BBS(CDROM,,0x0)..GO..NO..........H.L.-.D.T.-.S.T. .B.D.D.V.D.R.W. .C.H.0.8.L.S.1.0....................A.............................................>..Gd-.;.A..MQ..L.5.H.9.B.F.8.5.5.3.8. .5. . . . . . . . ........BO

Apparently my SAMSUNG 970 PRO 1TB was failing. It stopped now working. I noticed it too late what was happening.

SO BIG warning to everybody if something does not do anything like before maybe your M2 is failing and make immediate backup to other media.

Thanks for al the help. I hope this helps someone else experiencing the same problem.
