My root is encrypted by Luks without LVM.
My custom initramfs asks for the password to unlock root, then does so and hands over to the normal boot sequence.
This worked fine with gentoo-sources-5.4.109

However upon upgrading to 5.10.27 I am still asked for the password on the correct device, but when I enter it I am met with this error message.
Quote:
device mapper: table :254:00 : crypt unknown target"

Any advice?

PS I had no trouble with this upgrade on a different machine.

Hi,
make sure "Crypt target support" is built into the kernel, not as module. You can find more about it @ the wiki: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Dm-crypt

If you still need help, please pastebin the configuration of the kernel where it fails, and show us the full invocation of cryptsetup from the initramfs.

Many Thanks for the advice and offer of further help.
Crypt target support was compiled into the kernel, but thanks for the suggestion.
I have found a practical solution which works without me ever understanding what was wrong:
I took the kernel configuration from another computer that did have a working 5.10.27 kernel and an encrypted root
and made the modifications to enable it to work with the hardware of the computer that is the subject of this posting.
This works just fine. Thanks again to all.
