Attempts to emerge readline on a (mostly) stable system fail with:
Code:
unable to read SONAME from libreadline.so

Is there some workaround that I am missing?

Translated 'libreabline' to 'libreadline' in the title.Chiitoo

You tried to select (with eselect) latest binutils version?

This seems odd to me.

1. You have ~arch (~x86/testing/unstable) glibc (2.33), yet the rest of your system is stable. This is not a good idea as we try to make sure fixes for glibc filter down into stable before stabilisation of glibc itself.
2a. You don't seem to have depcleaned for a long time? Some of those GCC versions are really old (and I'm surprised you need all of the automake slots).
2b. You need to run emerge -ac (depclean) after every world update.
3. Make sure you have the latest GCC and Binutils set. I'd then rebuild libtool. See this guide which is less important nowadays but more important in your case given you have some older slots installed.
4. You have dev-util/pkgconfig providing virtual/pkgconfig, not dev-util/pkgconf (much superior). I wonder if you have dev-util/pkgconfig specifically in your /var/lib/portage/world file which isn't something you likely want to do.
5. Parts of your system are *really* up to date (like I said in 1., somewhat *too* up to date), while you have a very old version of Sandbox and OpenRC.

The part that's failing for you specifically is related to gen_usr_ldscript. In fact, I suspect this could be related to your very-very-new glibc but outdated rest of system. pax-utils must be kept up to date for glibc behaviour changes.

I suggest the following:
1. Follow the upgrading guide for GCC I linked to
2. Show us your /var/lib/portage/world file and emerge --deselect any core system libraries or obsolete packages you don't want. Your world file should be things that you personally want, not libraries or dependencies. It causes issues with dependency resolution down the road.
3. Run
Code:
emerge -a -uvDU @world --keep-going

then let us know what fails, and we'll debug that.

And do NOT unmerge or remove any packages unless you are depcleaning them.

Thanks sam_, I'll work on this. The system is an old one, which was neglected for a while, so depclean does not work, since some old packages are not in the repository now. On newer systems I do indeed depclean after each weekly update.

No problem! I know exactly what that is like. It might help if you share "grep -rsin * /etc/portage" too when you're able to get back to it. Give me a shout if I can help.

We should be able to mostly --deselect and not depclean anything until after the world update is done, but we'll see..

It may be possible to solve this problem by using package.mask to
prevent one of those packages from being selected. However, it is also
possible that conflicting dependencies exist such that they are
impossible to satisfy simultaneously.  If such a conflict exists in
the dependencies of two different packages, then those packages can
not be installed simultaneously.

For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man
page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

Ignore all of the cruft up until the REQUIRED_USE part for Rust. It's noise because Portage is stuck and can't get further. I always recommend focusing on the "most fatal issue" which is right down at the bottom (this is always true).

So, we ignore the scary conflicts and such for a moment, and let's think about Rust.

rickj wrote:

You have two choices:

1. If you're on x86 and you want Rust, you have to enable the CPU_FLAGS_X86_SSE2 USE flag. This is really unfortunate because a lot of x86 CPUs lack SSE2. I think it is technically possible to build Rust without it but there's no bootstrap binaries available (see this bug for info). So, this choice is to enable the flag if you've got it. If you install app-portage/cpuid2cpuflags, run it, then put the output into CPU_FLAGS_X86 in make.conf, that'll give you the appropriate values. If it lacks SSE2, see option 2.

OR, if you don't have the flag on your CPU:

2. Disable USE=policykit on elogind via package.use or just globally in make.conf.

(Technically, if you fall into 1., you could build it as described in the linked bug, but it's hard work at first. Once you have a binary though, you're fine in future.)

Since my cpu has no sse2 I disabled policykit in make.conf, and the emerge started with 192 packages. This is not a fast system, so it will take a while. bzip2 was the first package, and failed with "unable to read SONAME"

I'd --keep-going it, but once that's done, emerge -v1 pax-utils for me as an educated guess. If the world update fails after that, we'll manually run the command(s) and see what's going on. I won't hold my breath for it to be finished though! :)

I used --keep-going. The merge halted at gdbm because the version requested was not in the repository. 9 other packages (of 190) have also failed. Resumed merge, failed with "invalid resume list"
The failed packages were:

glibc, libpipeline, bzip, libmnl, zlib, mpc, libevent, debianitils,installkernel-gentoo,

lipbpipeline fails because, at the chacking phase, the C compiler "cannot create executables"

Perhaps I have a hardware problem here.

No worries. Let's dig in. --skipfirst may be an idea to just try get as much done as possible for now. Can you please share the build.log and config.log from libpipeline? Can you let me know if you tried re-emerging pax-utils too (it shouldn't affect this though)?

emerge --info lipbpipeline too.

I can't find a config.log

emerge of pax-utils failed because it needed linux-headers 5.10 merged first, and that did not work. Should I try it with --nodeps?

You're sure /var/tmp/portage/dev-libs/libpipeline-1.5.3/work/libpipeline-1.5.3/config.log doesn't exist? We're in trouble if not...

What files are in /var/tmp/portage/dev-libs/libpipeline-1.5.3/work/libpipeline-1.5.3/?

Aha, this is where glibc being from ~arch is biting us in the ...

Can you do some things:
1) Add "~sys-libs/glibc-2.33" to /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords (or some file in a directory there)? This will allow glibc-2.33 to continue to remain in ~arch but it won't upgrade to e.g. glibc-2.34 in future until it is stabled.
2) grep -rsin "glibc" /etc/portage and delete the existing package.accept_keywords entry which presumably is unversioned
3) Similarly to #1, don't do --nodeps, but please add ~sys-kernel/linux-headers-5.11 to package.accept_keywords too (similar rationale to above). It's genuinely needed for pax-utils and newer seccomp syscall filters.

Then retry pax-utils, then retry the world update with --keep-going again.

Yes, there is a config.log, for libpipeline, don't know why i could not see it:
Code:
This file contains any messages produced by compilers while
running configure, to aid debugging if configure makes a mistake.

It was created by libpipeline configure 1.5.3, which was
generated by GNU Autoconf 2.69.  Invocation command line was

  $ ./configure --prefix=/usr --build=i686-pc-linux-gnu --host=i686-pc-linux-gnu --mandir=/usr/share/man --infodir=/usr/share/info --datadir=/usr/share --sysconfdir=/etc --localstatedir=/var/lib --disable-dependency-tracking --disable-silent-rules --docdir=/usr/share/doc/libpipeline-1.5.3 --htmldir=/usr/share/doc/libpipeline-1.5.3/html --with-sysroot=/ --libdir=/usr/lib --disable-static

which clearly shows why the test compile failed: there was no input file.

Linux-headers-5.11 still fails to compile, because it cannot find libmpfr.so.4.

Configure normally probes the version in a few ways, and some of those probes fail with "no input file". This is misleading, but harmless. Your problem for both packages is that your compiler is linked to a libmpfr that you no longer have. You will need to restore that mpfr, or rebuild the compiler. If you choose the latter, you will need a working compiler (such as a newer/older gcc that is not linked to libmpfr.so.4).

I have several older compilers around. Tried 10.2.0, 9.3.0, 9.2.0, 8.2.0, 6.4.0, 4.9.3. All seem to wish libmpfr.so.4. I have libmpfr.so and libmpfr.so.6. I am not sure how to restore libmpfr.so.4.

As a last resort I symlinked libmpfr.so.4 to libmpfr.so.6.1.0 which was present. This allowed the compiler to work, and I have merged linux-headers-5.11 ans pax-utils-1.2.9 with apparent success. Does this seem to be a legitimate cheat? What is my best next step?

Linking like that may work, but is not a supported configuration. I suggest you remove it as soon as possible. Have you now rebuilt the compiler(s) to use the libmpfr.so.6? If not, do so. If so, then what remains to be done?

As for restoring libmpfr.so.4, I would have pulled it from a tbz2 of the older version, or from a system backup.

Rebuilt gcc, but the resulting compiler fails if I delete my scabrous symlink. Is there a way to force the rebuild to use the later libmpfr?

Are you sure you rebuilt the right package? For which files does ldd report a dependency on mpfr.so.4?

Right. linux-gate, libc, libgmp, ld-linux. Clearly libc is the prime suspect. Rebuilding...
