I got the dreaded 'uh oh something happened' and gnome shell did not start. Second machine to do this in a month but not the same problem.

I can't figure what the problem. Help appreciated.

Thanks

Same here.
I suspect that gnome-shell 3.38.3 uses glib function g_time_zone_new_identifier, which is defined from glib version 2.68. Unfortunately, glib 2.68 is masked ("Many reverse dependencies need to be ported due to changes in new glib Masking until they've been updated, see tracker bug for details bug #777675", https://packages.gentoo.org/packages/dev-libs/glib).

I got no solutions (using sddm & xfce right now), waiting for one.

Have a nice day.

Thanks zello. I have an other computer which is running gnome and glib-2.66.7 w/out problems.

Does anyone pay attention to this stuff. I posted a bug about this and there was no attention.

I did have a quick look at the bug few days ago. I suspected it may be because of something built against glib-2.68 pre-mask that couldn't take the downgrade but I didn't manage to reproduce (attempted to build multiple gnome things against 2.68 then downgrade) and didn't look further for now. You could always try to rebuild a few things anyway, glib, gjs, gnome-shell, maybe somehow coming from something else.

If it's the cause, likely never affected stable systems, or people that didn't rebuild while 2.68 was up so it's probably not widespread. Gentoo generally tries to avoid downgrades due to obscure situations like this, but in this case glib-2.68 was causing too many problems and preventing many important packages from building.

Zello, downgrade to gnome-settings-daemon-3.38.1 fixed this. By portage.

gnome-settings-daemon downgrade by portage fixed. Shame just because the problem was obscure that no help was forthcoming since it was caused by erroneous upgrade of glib. Only about two weeks though.
