During the process of untarring the stage*.tbz2 files, eventually the process comes to a stop at some random file. However the file it stops at seems to change whenever i try and has no pattern. I was wondering if anyone else had encountered this problem. It doesnt appear as though my computer freezes just the untarring doesnt continue. Any solutions? |

Robert: Chances of being out of ram is slim. And yes swap is activited.
Naan Yaar: Thanks for the link, am going to try that now |

What filesystem are you untarring into? If it's a journalling filesystem, could the journal be messed up? _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

...and are you untarring from the CD, or from the hard disk, using a tarball downloaded from the network? What does 'top' show about CPU usage once the untar process seems to hang? (if that's not available in your environment, never mind). _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

I am untarring from the CD but I have tried from my HDD as well. And yes its the standard tarballs from the standard iso. And no 'top' isnt available in my environment. |

In all honesty, the randomness of the problems reminds me of a compiling issue I had a few years back... turned out to be a intermittent sick of el cheapo ram
I would run a ram checker just for sanity if nothing else... I believe www.memtest86.com was the one I used... |

I try to input a number of basic commands, however none of them work. What is interesting though is I am able to ctrl+alt+del out of the install so it musnt be totally frozen. I have left it to run for awhile and there has been so success so i will try your ram test thanks. |
