How to turn off SVG icons?

Post by lanthruster » Wed Dec 23, 2020 1:03 pm

I have atom N2800 CPU and found a problem with the current qtsvg that affects most of the desktop environments.

The details:
if an icon has SVG representation at /usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/ and qtsvg is used to render SVG then
it takes a lot of system resources to render the icon.

The question: how to turn off svg icons globally - static icons like PNG are fast and no problem.

Put INSTALL_MASK="/usr/share/icons/*/scalable/*.svg" in make.conf, delete them and they won't come back on reinstall.

Deleting them is the only option? No way to exclude them from the menu icon choosing algorithm? May be some flag in .desktop file? It's set as "
When I delete SVG although the problem goes away and menu renders icons correctly the icon in pcmanfm is shown as X. And I'm not sure if I can safely remove all svg in /scalable/ folder...

The icons are set as
Icon=openshot-qt

openshot-qt has both svg and png representations. It follows that there must be some logic that chooses what to use when the icon is displayed - svg or png. Any way to manually configure that logic to prefer png over svg and only choose svg if no png is available?

That would speed up all the menu rendering multiple times without any quality loss in the majority of the cases.

Thanks!
