Fvwm3!

Post by ThomasAdam » Thu Oct 15, 2020 4:30 pm

Hello all,

Since I know there are (were?) a lot of Fvwm users here at one point, I thought I'd mention that I have released Fvwm3-1.0.1. You can find more information here: https://github.com/fvwmorg/fvwm3

The main differences between Fvwm2 and Fvwm3 are:
  • RandR support -- reacting to adding/removing/rotating monitors on-the-fly without the need to reboot
  • Independent desktops per-monitor -- that is, separate desktops on each monitor. See the DesktopConfiguration command
For a more detailed list of changes, see: https://github.com/fvwmorg/fvwm3/releases/tag/1.0.0

I'd be very interested in receiving ideas, comments, bug reports via the issue tracker: https://github.com/fvwmorg/fvwm3/issues

There's no functional changes to the configuration file parsing, so existing fvwm2rc files should work.

Thanks all!

Thomas

Hi Thomas,

this is a super-old thread, but I would very much like to install this (I'm still on fvwm-2.7.0, which has remained unchanged for a couple decades).

However, fvwm-2.7.0 is soft-blocking fvwm3. What's the process to upgrade?

Cheers,

EE

The soft-block is probably because the two packages install the same files, so without that block, you would get a build failure due to collisions. If so, then the process is just to remove fvwm before installing fvwm3. I suggest that you have a binpkg of fvwm-2 available in case you need to revert back, and that you check the upstream documentation for any caveats around required configuration file changes.

OK, I quit to a shell, unmerged fvwm and emerged fvwm3. Now I have a couple issues.

Transparency doesn't work, either on the menu or on FvwmButtons.
FvwmButtons, which used to appear along the right side of my right monitor, is now on the right side of my left monitor (I have two, but X treats them as one big virtual window, I think).
Also, windows/programs cannot spawn windows on a separate monitor than the one in which they are themselves. So, for example, I can't start fvwm with IconMan all the way in the lower-left corner on one monitor, and ButtonsBar all the way in the lower-right corner of the other, because those are two separate displays.
My .xsession file has an xmodmap command for the mouse that isn't getting applied.

How do I fix these things? There's supposed to be a patch for transparency, but it doesn't seem to have worked. I don't know how to manage the geometry settings so that modules appear on both monitors at startup.

Thanks for the help!
