Here's the scenario:

I had cups-1.1.5 running on Gentoo on one machine, with an Epson 680 on the parallel port, which worked just fine.

I've since installed Gentoo on another machine which I intend to run the printer off, and being a more recent install, this one has cups-1.1.5r2, and this one doesn't work. When I try to print a test page, I get this message in the cups error_log:

Unable to convert file 0 to printable format for job 1!

Checking the CUPS FAQ for this mentioned having EPS Ghostscript installed, but I definitely have that. Other than being a slightly newer update of Gentoo, there isn't any real difference between the two machines. I'm pretty confident the parallel driver is working (and the message suggests a file conversion problem, not a low-level parallel port problem anyway).

Anyone got any ideas?

It gets worse... trying to rebuild ghostscript (7.05.3-r1) fails now:

Code:

gcc  -DHAVE_MKSTEMP -O2 -mcpu=i686 -pipe -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -Wmissing-declarations -Wmissing-prototypes -Wcast-qual -Wwrite-strings -fno-builtin -fno-common  -I./obj -I./src  -o ./obj/gdevstp.o -c ./src/gdevstp.c
In file included from src/memory_.h:24,
                 from src/gdevprn.h:23,
                 from ./src/gdevstp.c:35:
src/std.h:26: arch.h: No such file or directory
In file included from src/gdevprn.h:31,
                 from ./src/gdevstp.c:35:
src/gxdevmem.h:113: parse error before `bits32'
src/gxdevmem.h:113: warning: no semicolon at end of struct or union
src/gxdevmem.h:113: warning: no semicolon at end of struct or union
src/gxdevmem.h:114: warning: type defaults to `int' in declaration of `color24'
src/gxdevmem.h:114: warning: data definition has no type or storage class
src/gxdevmem.h:127: parse error before `}'

src/gdevprn.h:256: sizeof applied to an incomplete type
src/gdevprn.h:256: sizeof applied to an incomplete type
make: *** [obj/gdevstp.o] Error 1

Makes me wonder how it built in the first place. Not a happy healthy system :(

What's even stranger is if I try to build manually (i.e. extract the bz2 file and ./configure, make myself), it builds fine. But when built by emerge, I get the above error.

I've done an emerge --debug to get the exact configure line too - and the make output when run by emerge and when run by hand is totally different. So now I'm confused.

I believe there is a bug in the current Ghostscript ebuild - if you edit the ebuild file & change 'emake' to 'make' it should emerge fine.

I too had a whole bunch of problems with the latest Cups and ended up dropping back to 1.14 which works fine.

I too am having all sorts of problems with CUPS 1.1.5-r2 (HP Officejet 710 prints 1st job then says parallel port is busy on next one and the Epson C80 USB gives the "Can't convert" message).

How do I emerge 1.1.4-r4? When I try emerge -p cups-1.1.4-r4.ebuild I get a dependency error message.

Or do I drop back using the original sources and ignore emerge?

TIA

Philip
