I am running alsa in my box and I am having problems configuring it.

I've got a Sound Blaster PCI 128 sound card, I emerged the alsa-drivers, modified the config files for my sound chip es1371, update-modules, rebooted, emerged the utils, and I got an error while trying to open a sound file (failed to open the sound device). Also when I boot, when the alsasound scripts inits, it seems to fail loading the snd-es1371 module with modprobe.

Could anyone tell me where the problem might be?

Do you have only sound support compiled into the kernel (or as a module)?

Actually in the kernel I have Sound Support and as a Module the sound card I use, but the module is not loaded in /etc/modules.autoload

That might be one problem. Only enable Sound Support (in kernel or module, I use module). With ALSA, no other options should be selected in the kernel.

Sound seems to be the most difficult/confusing thing to set up. I hosed mine the other day. A search for alsa turns up 526 matches.

Did you follow the instructions in Desktop Guide? In my case I hade to do "update-modules" and than reboot to make it work. Without "update-modules", it wouldn't work even after reboot.

the name of the alsa driver for that card is ens1371,, not es1371 like the kernel driver... i have the same card.

i have also a sb, but sb 16 pci...
and for me it's the es1371-modul... just forget about alsa, configure your sound in the kernel as a modul (es1371), compile it, reinstall it, and then try modprobe es1371... playwave xxx.wav should play the file... if anything went right, fill es1371 in the /etc/modules.autoload!

i hope i could help you
