Trackpad not working is it thardware or software

I have a thinkpad t430. I just replaced the trackpad with a board that I got from China. It is a synaptics. The trackpoint works, the trackpad buttons work, the cursor does not move however. The only way I can move the cursor is via the trackpoint.

So it looks like the kernel is seeing the synaptics trackpad and there are drivers for it....but it is not working

Is it hardware or software?

If software what else can I do to trouble shoot

what desktop enviroment do you use? Maybe there is some setting which can lead to this behavior
