Hello, everyone,
after running upgrade (
Code:
eix-sync && emerge -av --update --newuse --deep --with-bdeps=y --backtrack=30 @world
)

I end-up with black screen with blinking cursor, when system is started.

I have already experienced similar problem during one of the previous system updates: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1088312-highlight-.html

So I tried interactive boot (I use OpenRC), and have faced with issue that syslog-ng stucks.
I have found this topic: https://forums-web2.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1053732-start-25-postdays-0-postorder-asc-highlight-.html
I tried "RANDOM_TRUST_CPU=true" flag, it did not help.
haveged did help, though, and syslog-ng began starting normally.

But the black screen with blinking cursor did not go away.

After days of trying I have discovered that, when, during boot, I randomly press keys on keyboard, I end up with:

  • only TTY1 available (all other TTYs are unavailable - Ctrl+Alt+F<x> does not do anything), and there is no scrollback
  • sddm calls
    Code:
    /usr/bin/X -nolisten tcp -auth /var/run/sddm/{57855f2e-ed6c-4ccb-a32a-68b187975729} -background none -noreset -displayfd 17 -seat seat0 vt7

  • Xorg hangs after
    Code:
    (++) using VT number 7

  • some "kworker/0:0+events" process loads one of the CPU's kernel 100%
  • after some undefined time (it can be 2h, 7h...) all this gets unblocked:

    • all TTYs become available, and scrollback starts working
    • "kworker"disapears
    • Xorg and sddm launch, without any errors

I've walked through Xorg and NVIDIA Gentoo pagesdid not find anything misconfigured on my environment.

Logs and info:

  • What is "kworker" process?
  • Is it all somehow related to frambuffer or to random number generation or to openntpd?
  • Did anybody run into similar problem?

Please, help.

UPD:
I have downgraded x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers from 440.59 to 390.132-r1 and everything started to work.
(I did not find it out at once, I downgraded not down enough :roll:, there are two more versions in between: 430.64-r1 and 435.21-r1)

My NVIDIA card is:
Code:
VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GK104 [GeForce GTX 760] (rev a1)

So, this time, the problem was in the proprietary driver.

I don't mark this post as solved for now, because i still hope to find answers...

Meanwhile, I'm considering to configure VGA Hprofile in order to have working desktop in case of similar problem in the future.
Looks like the author of that page have had the same problem: "BSOD(tm)" :lol:.
