When I start SDDM, nothing shows up, even if I manually switch to TTY 7. The logs aren't very helpful either:

Code:

# /etc/init.d/xdm start
 * Setting up sddm ...                                                                                                                 [ ok ]
# /etc/init.d/xdm status
 * status: started
# tail /var/log/sddm.log

(The SIGTERMs are from me restarting to try to fix this issue)

Running emerge --info sddm:

I have re-merged it too, but still, the error persists. With no error messages whatsoever, it's hard to tell where to continue on trying to fix this issue.

Are you using the binary nvidia-drivers?

- If so then make sure you actually sure that CONFIG_DRM is set (despite that the Wiki page says it shouldn't) in the kernel and re-compile.
- Make sure the acpi driver kms uvm USE flags are set for nvidia-drivers
- Make sure that nvidia-drm.modeset=1 is set in /etc/default/grub and that you run grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg after (make sure /boot is mounted!)

This enables the nvidia-drm and modesetting. Without it recent versions of SDDM don't work and only show a blinking cursor. I had the exact same issue with SDDM.

But why does it say so?

Why it does is so I don't know. It's fine in 0.15 but everything > than 0.15 requires this change. I guess something changed after sddm-0.15 that requires this change. I also filed a bug on it on bugzilla, which as I marked as resolved with this answer.

I guess the Wiki is outdated: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/NVIDIA/nvidia-drivers < Direct rendering is not enabled part
See: https://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/440.44/README/kms.html for details.

I'm aware of that, but it would require quite the rewrite, as quite a lot has changed and can not spare the time unfortunately. I've produced a few changes / modifications and even new pages on the Wiki myself, but am extremely limited in my time I can spend on it. Just trying to help wherever I can.

Update: This is also relating to libglvnd which should be enabled (force enabled) when using a Lenovo ThinkPad with integrated graphics, that routes the external ports on the laptop hardwired to the nvidia chip for maintaining compatibility when using the xf86-video-modeset driver and various other items. Same goes for UEFI documentaiton that efifb can be used safely for native resolution with an EFI system (the wiki says it can't). etc. etc.
