First of all, I run this on a remote computer. It has always worked without complaint (for years), but now I get the following warning, and I do not know the inner workings of how everything talks to each other in desktop environments. I have installed / updated virtually nothing since the last time it worked.

Code:

$ ktorrent
QStandardPaths: XDG_RUNTIME_DIR not set, defaulting to '/tmp/runtime-user'
"Session bus not found\nTo circumvent this problem try the following command (with Linux and bash)\nexport $(dbus-launch)"

Running that command does indeed allow the program to start, but I never needed to manually create the session bus before. Any ideas regarding what is happening (particularly if something has failed)?

Setting XDG_RUNTIME_DIR and launching user owned dbus-daemon is usually the job of the likes of consolekit, elogind, systemd, or yourself if you use a basic .xinitrc (or similar) with none of those if still needed. When missing, some applications will force start it on their own and use reasonable defaults, but others may assume it was handled by the X session and fail.

When done with reasonable defaults, it usually creates/updates a automated ~/.dbus/ which can be used even if the environment variables are missing (like if using ssh, you did mention remote but not sure how you're running it). I'd assume either something changed with the login system, something else you ran used to start dbus with said defaults, or you changed something with how you start ktorrent and it's missing variables (may need to set appropriate DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS)

I don't use ktorrent nor KDE, so I don't think I can provide much more insight on what might be wrong here.
