I recently made some updates to my system and the next time I rebooted I could not login to KDE. I can reach the login screen, but once I type my password the login screen froze. I can move the cursor, but that's about it. The only error in the Xorg.0.log was a message similar to:

Code:
(EE) Failed to open authorization file "/var/run/sddm/{e74ac816-b1a5-471d-8d73-042c3f9ee755}": No such file or directory

However, this file does exist.

I have seen some other posts with a similar error message, but I have not seen any clarity on whether this is actually the problem or if there is a general solution other than backing up the user directory and completely nuking the user and starting over again, which I'd like to avoid if possible.

Fortunately, I am able to Ctrl-Alt-F1 to a terminal despite the screen being frozen. If I delete the ~/.Xauthority file and restart xdm/sddm I can login successfully. Unfortunately, once I reboot the problem resurfaces and I have to go through the same process of deleting the .Xauthority file again.

I looked at the other threads about this issue. Unfortunately, none of them shows a solution.

1) Do you use Systemd? Or OpenRC?

2) Please post the output of
Code:
emerge --info

I use OpenRC.

Code:
>emerge --info

The output of 'emerege --info' looks good. I could be that the issue is related to the way '/var/run' is set up when you boot your machine.
  1. Is '/var/run' a link to '/run' and is a tmpfs volume mounted on '/run'?

  2. Does
    Code:
    rc-update -s | grep tmp
    show
    Code:
         opentmpfiles-dev |                                 sysinit
       opentmpfiles-setup | boot

In regards to 1.
Code:
ls -alh /var/run

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 Dec 29 13:55 /var/run -> /run

And for 2.: Yes, the output looks identical.

Not really an ideal solution, but completely removing the user and recreating it from scratch resolved the problem.
