Hi There

I have been trying for some time to get my urxvt to display glyphs such as font awesome with not a great amount of luck so far.

Font management is relatively new to me and I am hoping someone can help point me in the right direction.

So far I have:

1. Verified that it is urxvt I am using and not rxvt
2. Re-compiled urxvt with xft use flag
3. Installed Font Awesome - Verified that it is in the correct location with fc-list
4. Installed Nerd fonts with Font Awesome - Verified that it is in the correct location with fc-list
5. Installed Powerline fonts - Verified that it is in the correct location with fc-list
6. Initially locales wer not set but have now set to en_US.iso885915, and en_US.utf8 and re-generated locale

I have now installed oh-my-zsh and installed the powerlevel9k and powerlevel10k themes, some of the unicode characters are now showing but most are just square boxes and similar in gucharmap.

N.B. I have been a Gentoo user for some time now, but this is my first post on any forum for many many years of any kind so please let me know if there is any etiquette I have missed in this post.

Thanks, any help is appreciated :)[/code][/url][/topic][/post]

What are your settings in ~/.Xresources?

You need to patch urxvt, otherwise it's not possible.
You can use this ebuild:

Full unicode support on urxvt is still tricky, you can kind of get majority of glyphs with special fonts but not all of them and not in all scenarios for all fonts. xterm supports more of unicode but it's slower, st also good alternative but it's more painful to configure.
Anyway here is mine urxvt overlay (it also has full color support), you can experiment with it: https://gitlab.com/odx/overlay/tree/master/x11-terms/rxvt-unicode

Using -r6 & -r8 from the 2 overlays from above, both are giving squares in the bash prompt, in a place or another, accordingly.
Code:
URxvt.reverseVideo:                 true
URxvt.scrollstyle:                  rxvt ! likely defaulted to plain
URxvt.scrollBar_right:              true
URxvt.scrollTtyOutput:              false
URxvt.scrollTtyKeypress:            true
URxvt.scrollWithBuffer:             true
 *.color12:                          #5555ff
URxvt.scrollColor:                  olive
URxvt.font:                           xft:terminus-10:encoding=combined
URxvt.saveLines:                    100000
URxvt.letterSpace:                  -6
URxvt.perl-ext-common:              font-size,tabbed,url-select

! Not found in -help!

!FONTS
URxvt.keysym.C-Up:     font-size:increase
URxvt.keysym.C-Down:   font-size:decrease
URxvt.keysym.C-S-Up:   font-size:incglobal
URxvt.keysym.C-S-Down: font-size:decglobal
URxvt.keysym.C-equal:  font-size:reset

!URL-SELECT
!URxvt.perl-ext: default,url-select
!NOMOUSE
URxvt.url-select.underline: true
URxvt.url-select.launcher: /usr/bin/xdg-open
Any idea how 2 fix?
Edit:
Code:
media-fonts/powerline-symbols
     Installed versions:  20170508(16:18:33 25/12/2019)(X)
Thks 4 ur attention.

For terminus I don't think you can fix that, try another font. Here are test documents for testing:

(use save as text file in a browser)

I preferred default font, especially regarding char spacing, quite readable despite small.
I've only set terminus font for char size changes to work.

Which font, or kind of font should I use?
Is media-fonts/powerline-symbols supposed to be the answer?

How should it be configured in .Xdefaults file?

You need font with glyphs, nerd fonts are great.
https://github.com/ryanoasis/nerd-fonts/releases

Scroll down a little and pick which font you like, there's Terminus as well.

Here's mine from config, works fine :
Code:
URxvt.font: xft:RobotoMono Nerd Font:medium:pixelsize=14
URxvt.boldFont: xft:RobotoMono Nerd Font:bold:pixelsize=14
URxvt.italicFont: xft:RobotoMono Nerd Font:italic:pixelsize=14
URxvt.boldItalicFont: xft:RobotoMono Nerd Font:bold:italic:pixelsize=14
