Hi,

I have this issue that if i try any drivers above 390 i get a black screen with a mouse on SDDM.

This is from the journal:

Code:

sddm-greeter[3280]: Failed to create OpenGL context for format QSurfaceFormat(version 2.0, options QFlags(), depthBufferSize 24, redBufferSize -1, greenBufferSize -1, blueBufferSize -1, alphaBufferSize -1, stencilBufferSize 8, samples -1, swapBehavior 2, swapInterval 1, profile  0)

What kind of info do i need to look at or provide to investigate this further?

I tried that but it didn't work for me still black screen with the same error.

I should mention that i also got the new kernel but for 82 the 390 drivers don't seem to work for some reason so now i really need those 400.x series drives.

Any other ideas to investigate?

Ok, the gpu should be compatible.
Please post an xorg log when run with a current nvidia 440 driver installed. Also post the output of
emerge -pv =nvidia-drivers-440.36

That version is masked so:
Code:

!!! All ebuilds that could satisfy "=nvidia-drivers-440.36" have been masked.
!!! One of the following masked packages is required to complete your request:
- x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-440.36::gentoo (masked by: ~amd64 keyword)

For more information, see the MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge
man page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

As far as the xorg, here it is:

440.31

Code:

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild     U  ] x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-440.31:0/440::gentoo [390.129:0/390::gentoo] USE="X acpi driver kms multilib tools -compat -gtk3 (-libglvnd) -static-libs -uvm -wayland" ABI_X86="32 (64) (-x32)" 0 KiB

Total: 1 package (1 upgrade), Size of downloads: 0 KiB

But i keep it masked above 390 at the moment to continue having a working system

As for the groups:

Code:
video sddm

BTW, seems related

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1097502.html

Left unresolved

Same guy less related
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1097544-start-0.html

i tried adding some configuration to Xsetup as mentioned there but it didn't help.

i also have the sys-apps/haveged package so that's not it either

So far it looks like an SDDM issue not an nvidia one

That user meets different issues, sddm starts but the login doesn't work.
All your logs look correct, so it's a bit puzzling.
Please post the output of
ls -l /dev/nvi*
and make sure gl is switched to nvidia
eselect opengl list
