I have an x60 thinkpad (i386) I'm using as a headless server. I have an externally powered USB harddrive enclosure and hard drive connected. The server runs 24/7 without issue, and some minutes after startup, the screen shuts off. At this point if the mouse (strain gauge) is moved, or a key is touched, the screen "wakes up" and simultaneously the USB device disconnects. It reconnects later as a new device (say /dev/sdc instead of /dev/sdb). This breaks existing mounts.

How should I go about troubleshooting this? My best idea at this point, is to try a different usb hard drive enclosure, to narrow down where the problem is. I don't see any relevant info in the logs. I don't know how to get more details than that. It's strange that the monitor sleep mode would interact with USB.

See the following syslog:

That worked, thanks. Recompiled kernel. Kernel settings removed in power management and acpi options were:

*Suspend to ram and standby
*Hibernation
*Device power management core functionality

I was worried the screen wouldn't switch off if I did that, but it still does, so everything seems to be working. The only thing now enabled in power management is ACPI support. That must be what handles screen timeout.
