Shall we be sorry for Californians who have elected democrats and now have a state which won't resist a little wind - or shall we say: you asked for it? _________________ Please learn how to denote units correctly! |

I'll be up here in Idaho not giving the tiniest damn about how badly California burns. I thoroughly resent that place. _________________ Git has obsoleted SVN.

When I was a kid, they used to control the brush rather well. Then came the 'environmentalists' demanding that some odd creatures habitats not be destroyed. So the brush got out of control.
The controlled burns were stepped back to "protect" some creatures and the result now is massive wildfires killing everything.

So are you telling me that 85 people are dead and everyone in Paradise lost their homes because the environmentalist wackos were afraid of preemptive burning? _________________ Git has obsoleted SVN.

Not exactly. They may want crazy things, the problem here is they were allowed to get it. The People of California wished for it. _________________ Please learn how to denote units correctly! |

Wildfires Caused By Bad Environmental Policy Are Causing California Forests To Be Net CO2 Emitters
Quote: | This is California’s big secret: it’s not climate change that’s burning up the forests, killing people, and destroying hundreds of homes; it’s decades of environmental mismanagement that has created a tinderbox of unharvested timber, dead trees, and thick underbrush. |

Eh, wind - the enemy of socialism.
I recall from history classes. Before Lenin and Co. destroyed the Russian economy and culture there was extremely fertile land in Ukraine. The area was called "The Granary of Europe", they provided half of Europe with wheat. Farmers had their fields, separated by bushes and trees. After collectivization Stalin ordered to get rid of those obstacles to have a big farming field instead of separate ones. But what do you know, wind! It came and blew the fertile dirt away. And "The Granary of Europe" started suffering from famine ... _________________ Please learn how to denote units correctly! |

That's why they never look back at the disasters they have created. Look at the events here in the US. There was capitalism alright, it created the so called Golden Age. With all that wealth at hand government started growing and poking its nose everywhere. Regulation is needed to make it even better! With their regulations they crippled capitalism, it started failing here and there. More regulation is needed! Capitalism doesn't work without regulation! So we had more, and more, and more regulation. Now the capitalism is so well tuned and regulated it cannot breathe, it is practically dead. But of course, when capitalism fails then socialism will replace it. That's what we are about to get. _________________ Please learn how to denote units correctly! |

I would also be surprised if the people who died in Paradise were the same ones who voted for those idiot policy makers. _________________ Git has obsoleted SVN.

@Muso totally agree on that one with you.
An example from Europe: Before the Euro and the virtual enrichment with it in Greece
there were not that much fires as now every third year, because people had gone in the hills to grab some wood for the winter to get heat.
A question about U.S. housing:
Why doesn't the rich get their houses built in stone?
Is it because of earth quakes in California?
In Germany there is a very old word for being rich:
steinreich == stone rich
which meant in the middle ages only the rich living at the steinstrasse (stone street) had their houses built from stones.
All others just with clay and wood. _________________ the thread ain't easily find an end |

I honestly don't know. In Okinawa, they build their buildings out of cement (aside from Shuri castle.... burned down this morning ) with windproof doors. Okinawa gets slammed by typhoons so they build accordingly. Florida still has people building flimsy houses out of wood, right next to the beach. When Okinawa gets hit by a typhoon, minimal damage. When Florida gets hit by a hurricane, massive damage.
Maybe someday I can be steinreich. I love that idea. _________________ "You can lead a horticulture but you can't make her think" ~ Dorothy Parker

The US Marines did a number on it in 1945.
I didn't know they rebuilt it. A lot of US blood soaked into that ground. My dad was off the coast in a supply ship. More sailors died from kamikaze attacks than Marines on the Island. Thank the gods for Fat Man and Little Boy. _________________ The Future Ain't What It Used To Be

I think I saw somewhere in the news California enacted a law allowing them to fine PG&E $100k per day for "violations". Isn't this wonderful constructive democrat thinking. Fine an already bankrupt company $100k a day and the problem is solved. What's the next step, nationalizing PG&E, may I recommend. One step closer to the communism. I'm sure if we had an objective look at PG&E troubles we'd see its operations have been crippled by all kind of taxes and fees imposed by the same always greedy government. _________________ Please learn how to denote units correctly! |

What's the difference between California and the Titanic?
