Consolekit? elogind? systemd-logind? None?

Well, I'm curious what the distribution is like for Gentoo users that use Gentoo as a workstation.

So: for your most often used Gentoo machine that you sit at and do work/play/whatever, what console management system do you use if any?

Do NOT count servers or other machines that you connect via network only. If a server just so happens to be the machine you sit at console, then count it.

Note that this is not counting whether you use a graphical login manager, but rather a console seat manager. You probably chose one when you chose to install a desktop environment, so curious what you use. If you use more than one system, then just pick one you use.

Just wondering how soon consolekit might get lastrited in portage due to lack of use :(

elogind. Converted from ConsoleKit a year ago because Microsoft made Skype for Linux dependent on systemd-logind. A choice between the devil and the deep blue sea, because ConsoleKit is/was nothing to write home about:

Elogind, Kms moderating needs root and the only way with running Xorg or Wayland as root is elogind. Now I wish if someone could create the elogind alternative that just does that and have Xorg and Wayland use is it.

Personally I do no care about elogind or systemd for that matter but have 100 issues with Pam polkit and glibc nsswitch stuff.

I think your question is badly ask, you should more seek "who the fuck use seats"? rather than if anyone use this or that for seats

For now even ones answering "i use elogind" are telling you they don't use it for that purpose.

I use elogind because of sys-auth/polkit, but I'm trying to get rid of both.

This summarizes how I use my workstations: I put in a chair for my computer even though I'm mostly the only one sitting in them. I let other people sit in it when they come but mostly it's still my seat. I suspect others install a seat on their one console machine for whatever reason too. So yes, people using a single seat should answer, don't care of reason but you're welcome to share as some have (skype... booo....), just wanted to know what brand of chair.

Main reason for using seats for me is that the DE integration with udisks/power seems more seamless for whoever is logged into the console. I've gotten too lazy to make unique mounts with sudo for each and every USB and SD card/cdrom/... I plug in, it's very nice that the integration automatically creates its own nonconflicting directory and mounts with a click - for just about any mass storage device for the user sitting at console. Just too convenient, saves me a lot of effort keeping track of temporary mount points which had gotten really unwieldy for me.

The type of chair had been consolekit for me a long time, though I now have systems of all three flavors of chairs...

Even inside a de/dm you don't need *kit/*logind to execute shutdown/reboot, you just need the ability to execute scripts and/or aliases along with sudo.

I'd like to get rid of polkit. The configuration alone is one big reason. Another is webkit depency.
But since I want to keep elogind, I guess I have no choice.

Someone, please, make a lightweight, easily configurable, drop-in replacement for polkit? Anyone? :(

What webkit dependency? And I don't remember configuring polkit manually at all.

I thought the Gentoo devs did pretty good with polkit default configuration, the only troubles I had were a long, long time ago.

The nasty dependency of polkit is now spidermonkey - the javascript interpreter. As much as I dislike the decision to use javascript, it does add if-then-else configureability to policy.

I use consolekit cause the Gentoo Awesome WM wiki suggests it and I've been too lazy to explore whether it's really a hard-dependency.
