Hi,
I've set up ntp according to the wiki (https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Ntp) to set the time during boot. The ntp-client rc service is in the default runlevel. During boot, it correctly sets the time through ntp servers in the net. ntpclient needs some seconds which is fine.

The problem is: The boot process stops at this point and waits for ntp to finish before it continues - which is not fine for me.

I've searched a while for a solution but found nothing. How can I tell ntpdate (or the ntp-client service) to run in the background so that the following processes can continue starting? Or is this a bad idea because it could lead to the system time being set backwards while certain services still get started? I dont need ntpd as a deamon watching over system time all the time since this is not a server but a workstation being powered off and on regularly.

Thanks.

You could try
Code:
rc_parallel="yes"
in /etc/rc.conf - but I don't know the consequences if the timestep is too big.
Also parallel-startup can in some cases halt startup (see the comments in /etc/rc.conf)
