You can try creating a new user with an clean home directory to see if there are some configuration files in your home that conflicts.
There are some log files or messages?

Does the theme change only in some programs?

I had problems with xfce themeing because GTK3 not offically supporting themeing at all. I had only GTK2 programs getting the theme change.

I tried to create a new user but the problem is the same.

when I try to change theme I have these messages
Code:

(gtk-theme-switch:10945): Gtk-WARNING **: 10:19:36.669: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "clearlooks",
/usr/share/themes/MurrinaBlu/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:249: Murrine configuration option "gradients" is no longer supported and will be ignored.
/usr/share/themes/MurrinaBlu/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:294: Murrine configuration option "gradients" is no longer supported and will be ignored.

but I'm not sure that they're important

The problem is for all applications, I tryed gtk2 themes and gtk3 themes, so xfce4 themes...

@luna80:

What's the contents of ~/.gtkrc-2.0 and ~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini?

.gtkrc-2.0

Code:
# -- THEME AUTO-WRITTEN BY gtk-theme-switch2 DO NOT EDIT
include "/usr/share/themes/Adwaita/gtk-2.0/gtkrc"

include "/home/diana/.gtkrc-2.0.mine"

# -- THEME AUTO-WRITTEN BY gtk-theme-switch2 DO NOT EDIT

I don't have .config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini file

Well, what's in /home/diana/.gtkrc-2.0.mine? Just trying to check if there's something wrong in your GTK 2.x configuration files...

Try installing x11-themes/gtk-engines-ubuntulooks.

You may try configuring GTK 2.x manually instead of using gtk-theme-switch2.

For example you could put the following lines in your ~/gtkrc-2.0 file after removing existing contents:

Code:
gtk-icon-theme-name = "Adwaita"
gtk-theme-name = "Adwaita"
gtk-font-name = "DejaVu Sans 11"

Of course pick your favorite font and theme.
